Doctor Strange 2 Means The MCU Risks Forgetting Its Best Multiverse Story

After What If? and No Way Home, the next best chance for the storylines set up in Loki to be paid off is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘newest trailer shows that important Loki concepts, such as the TVA and Kang’s plans, are still being ignored in the current MCU’s Multiverse saga. The Super Bowl trailer for Multiverse of Madness confirmed the presence of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and raised the expectations for what else the film will feature. A few months after Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together five villains from previous movies as well as the other Peter Parkers, another large-scale multiversal adventure is heading to the MCU.

After the end of the Infinity Saga, the Multiverse seems to have become the answer found by the franchise to keep audiences engaged. The possibilities of integrating characters from different eras and providing never-before-imagined interactions on the big screen make this plan an almost guaranteed success. While the first Doctor Strange movie had already mentioned the existence of a Multiverse in the MCU, it was not only until Loki introduced variants that the saga finally started working with the idea that there are different versions of the same character existing at the same time.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is yet another massive step towards Marvel’s Multiverse. However, so far, no elements linked to Loki – a series that was a pioneer in dealing with the subject of the Multiverse – have been present in the film’s marketing. While Doctor Strange 2 may have some Loki-related surprises in store upon release, the last two MCU productions that involved the Multiverse also ignored the events of the Loki series. Concepts such as variants, the Sacred Timeline, the TVA, or even a Kang the Conqueror variant were lacking in both What If …? spirit No Way Home.

At the end of Loki, it seemed that Sylvie’s decision to kill He Who Remains and eliminate the barrier that isolated the Sacred Timeline from the infinite other ones would be what would cause the Multiverse to unlock. However, What If …? never mentioned anything about the original plans of Kang or the Time Keepers and No Way Home treated its Multiverse as a purely accidental event. Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man iterations, for example, were not even referred to as variants. Even if Multiverse of Madness does bring something from Loki to an already packed film, the main justification behind the conflicts in the movie is most likely going to be Doctor Strange’s and Scarlet Witch’s reckless actions.

After What If …? spirit No Way Homethe next best chance for the storylines set up in Loki to be paid off is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As of now, the only confirmed link to the events of God of Mischief’s show in the MCU is the presence of Kang The Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaa film that will only premiere in 2023. If no other production evolving the Multiverse brings anything of substantial about Loki by then, it will have been two years without any direct connections to a show that seemed so important at first.
