Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought fans Disney +’s television series and some of the most popular movies within the universe. At the very center of these shows and films are the beloved characters who have been on screen for years, as well as some new faces.
The characters who have been introduced in Phase Four have elevated the stories that viewers already know and love. These new additions provide a future of the MCU as it is handed over to a new generation of heroes and villains. Phase Four has also generated fan theories following the trajectory that the MCU could go into.
10 Dane Whitman Has So Much Potential (The Eternals)
Initially, Dane Whitman does not appear to be an interesting character. Dane is introduced as Eternal Sersi’s very human, very dull boyfriend who works at the Natural History Museum. However, the interesting part of Dane’s character lies in The Eternals post-credits scene.
The scene shows Dane opening a box containing the Ebony Blade, a weapon that he wields while acting as the Black Knight in the comics. Because of this scene, many fans have theorized that Whitman will become a much larger figure within the future of the MCU.
9 Xialing Is As Skilled As Her Brother (Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings)
Xialing is one of the standout characters of Shang-Chi. She is the protagonist’s younger sister and a talented martial artist. She reunites with her brother when he is summoned to the Golden Daggers Club, a fight club in Macau that Xialing founded.
The second post-credits scene in Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings shows Xialing taking command of the Ten Rings organization, despite telling Shang-Chi she would help disband it. Many fans have called for, and there have been rumors of, a Xialing-led spin-off series centered on the Ten Rings.
8 Makkari Is Marvel’s Best Speedster (The Eternals)
Makkari is The Eternals’ speedster and was a fan favorite amongst the group. The scenes of Makkari using her powers are some of the best scenes in superhero movies. Her powers are also essential to the success of The Eternal’s plan to stop the Emergence.
Makkari is able to run hundreds of miles, locate the island that is the epicenter of the emergence, and use her powers to fight against Ikaris. Makkari is deaf, teaching the first humans how to sign, and has a playful personality that shines in her relationship with Druig.
7 Billy And Tommy Elevated Wanda’s Story (WandaVision)
Billy and Tommy come as a package deal. They are Wanda and Vision’s twin boys who are introduced when Wanda gives birth after an accelerated pregnancy. Being able to rapidly age themselves, the boys are mostly seen as ten-year-olds. As fans caught a glimpse of what their powers could do, viewers saw Billy can use telekinesis and telepathy, and Tommy has superspeed powers like his uncle Pietro Maximoff.
As Wanda dissolved the illusion of Westview, Tommy and Billy faded with it. However, with the concept of the multiverse being explored, fans are hopeful that the twins will return to their screens.
6 Sylvie Laufeydottir Made Loki’s Story Brilliant (Loki)
Introduced in Loki, Sylvie Laufeydottir is a female Loki variant from an alternate timeline. Initially an antagonist, Loki and Sylvie form a reluctant and unlikely alliance in order to take down the Time Variance Authority. The two grow close and fans loved their dynamic.
When their relationship became romantic, many viewers resented the change because Sylvie was a variant of Loki. Their sudden romance did not sit well with fans. The end of Loki saw Sylvie kill the creator of TVA and split open the multiverse, meaning there are many places for the MCU and her character to go in the future.
5 Maya Lopez Was Never Truly A Villain (Hawkeye)
In her debut acting role, Alaqua Cox joined the MCU as Maya Lopez in Hawkeye. Lopez was introduced as the head of the Tracksuit Mafia and is one of Clint and Kate’s main adversaries throughout Hawkeye. When Lopez was a young girl, her father was killed by Ronin, who was later revealed to be Clint.
Upon realizing that it was Kingpin who orchestrated her father’s death, Maya tracks him down. Hawkeye ends with Maya pulling a gun on Fisk. Lopez will return in a solo series, Echo, and fans are excited to go deeper into her story.
4 Agatha Harkness Was Almost A Match For Wanda (WandaVision)
Agatha Harkness began WandaVision under the guise of Wanda’s nosy neighbor, Agnes. She was portrayed as an intrusive character, though she did seem to want to help Wanda fit into the neighborhood. However, her true identity as Agatha brought a new villain into the story and magic into the MCU.
Her song, Agatha All Along, garnered 1.6 million streams and helped Agatha develop into a fan-favorite character. Agatha is set to return to screens in a new Disney + series titled Agatha: House Of Harkness, either in 2023 or early 2024.
3 Kate Bishop Is A Great Successor To Clint Barton (Hawkeye)
In Disney +’s Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest archer”, teams up with a reluctant Clint Barton after she accidentally convinces Barton’s enemies that Ronin has returned. Throughout Hawkeye, Kate grows from a naive avengers fan to a superhero, helping to protect New York City and take down the Tracksuit Mafia, Kingpin, and even her mother, Eleanor Bishop.
Kate’s relationships with Barton and Yelena Belova were two of the most loved parts of Hawkeyewith fans calling for Yelena and Kate to be given their own spin-off movie.
2 Shang-Chi Led A Brilliant Movie (Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings)
Shang-Chi was a ground-breaking addition to the MCU, being at the helm of Marvel’s first Asian-led movie. He is a brilliant character; a genuine, kind person who is brought back into his family’s feuding by his father. Shang-Chi inherits the Ten Rings from his father and, in a post-credit scene, researches the origin of the rings with Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers. It’s likely fans will see Shang-Chi again.
This character and The Legend Of The Ten Rings brought some of the best hand-to-hand combat sequences in MCU history. The Legend Of The Ten Rings also brought gritty family drama and brilliant comedy.
1 Yelena Belova Stole The Show (Black Widow)
Natasha Romanoff’s younger sister and fellow Black Widow assassin made her MCU debut in Black Widow. Although many fans enjoyed the fact that Natasha finally got her own solo movie, Yelena quickly became a fan favorite. Yelena is brilliantly portrayed by Florence Pugh, and fans adore the relationship between the sisters.
Pugh reprised her role in Hawkeye, as Yelena attempted to kill Barton following the events on Vormir. Fans loved the dynamic between Yelena and newcomer Kate Bishop and the comedic elements that the two added to the series.
