Doctor Strange Will Learn From New MCU Hero In Multiverse Of Madness

Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez will serve as Stephen Strange’s teacher in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – and he will not like it.

America Chavez will have a lot to teach Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Master of the Mystic Arts have always known the multiverse exists. After all, in the MCU sorcerers conduct magic by drawing energy from other dimensions, using it to reshape reality on this plane of existence. But, for all the Ancient One taught her students to tap into multiversal magic, in reality, their role has simply been to prevent incursions into this dimension.

The multiverse lies at the heart of the MCU’s Phase 4. Doctor Strange himself broke the barriers between dimensions in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with an ill-considered memory spell backfiring and drawing beings from other timelines into the mainstream MCU. But the multiverse looks set to be fragmenting in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, although as yet it’s unclear just who is really behind the catastrophe. Fortunately Stephen Strange will have unexpected help in the form of Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, director Sam Raimi hinted at America Chavez’s role as Doctor Strange’s teacher. “Strange is still learning about the multiverse,“he pointed out.”And here’s a character that can actually travel through it. He’s such a know-it-all all the time, and to have to learn from a kid probably smarts.“By now, Strange considers himself a seasoned superhero, and in Spider-Man: No Way Home he even hinted he believes he should be the Sorcerer Supreme. No doubt the dynamic between America Chavez and Doctor Strange will be an amusing one, with Strange resenting the fact a teenager knows so much more about the multiverse than he does.

Xochitl Gomez America Chavez Doctor Strange 2 Multiverse of Madness

It makes sense for Marvel to introduce America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the comics, she’s a superhero who originates from another dimension and considers herself the multiverse’s surgeon. Assuming Gomez’s version is the same, she’ll already saved countless dimensions, and she’ll presumably cross Doctor Strange’s path as she once again attempts to save the multiverse itself. The Doctor Strange 2 trailers seem to hint Strange himself could be a threat, in which case they may start out as allies, but wind up on opposing sides of the multiversal anarchy.

It remains to be seen how good a teacher America Chavez will be, of course. The multiverse is second nature to her, meaning the very things Doctor Strange finds confusing about it are probably things she has never thought to question. Still, at least America Chavez’s powers will mean she’ll be an effective guide in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
