Here’s Where Kirsten Dunst’s MJ is, According to the MCU Movie

The latest addition to the Spider-Man franchise was Spider-Man: No Way Homewhich involved a crossover of all the Spider-Man franchises, including past actors who played Spider-Man from the different films. One of the MCU’s most highly anticipated movies in its history, No Way Home not only broke box office records, it also broke digital home release records when it was made available for home viewing in March, instantly becoming a fan-favorite in the high-grossing movie franchise.

In Sam Raimi’s original 2002 franchise, Peter Parker (played by Tobey Maguire) found a love interest in MJ, who was played by Kirsten Dunst. While Maguire returned to his beloved character in No Way Home, Dunst, however, did not. The actress did not express any interest in returning in another Spider-Man movie. Based on where MJ is, according to Maguire’s Peter Parker in No Way Home, there’s certainly room for a future story. Here’s where Dunst’s MJ is right now.

How Did We Last Leave Kirsten Dunst’s MJ?

The last appearance for Dunst’s version of MJ was in Spider-Man 3, released in 2007, which was the final addition to the Maguire-led series. The film was action-packed in nature, and we see Peter Parker struggling with his darker side while also facing off against Venom, the Sandman, and Harry Osborn’s Goblin. The film is one of the darker additions to the Spider-Man franchise, and we see MJ and Peter Parker’s relationship tested more than ever.

Towards the end of the film, Peter must save Mary Jane who is being held captive at a construction site after she is abducted by Eddie Brock, AKA Venom. This results in a dramatic showdown where Peter must defeat the evil that is possessing Brock and, eventually, he is able to save MJ. The end of the film shows them in an embrace and portrays their relationship as loving, healthy, and moving forward. Unlike Spider-Man spirit Spider-Man 2MJ is safe, and their relationship seems to be stronger than ever.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Updates

Marvel Studios / Sony

Spider Man: No Way Home shows Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man in the present day as he, with Doctor Strange’s help, messes with the universe, which results in characters from other timelines crossing over into his own. We see the return of both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s versions of Spider-Man. More than being a moment of fan-service, the Spider-Man team-up provided an amusing exchange, filled with nostalgia and heartwarming updates on each of the past Spider-Men. Each Peter Parker compared abilities, discussed differences in their hero journeys, and, most importantly, provided audiences with ideas of where they were in their respective universes.

During one discussion, we receive a small update to the status of Maguire’s Peter Parker and Dunst’s MJ: Maguire’s Peter reveals that he and MJ are still together and in a healthy relationship, though the road to where they are now was not without its bumps and bruises. Anyone who has seen any Spider-Man movie knows how each Peter’s relationships are often put in danger. Garfield’s Peter, for instance, was unable to save his Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Needless to say, knowing that Dunst’s MJ is alive and well was a heartwarming update for long-time fans.

What Could the Future Hold for Kirsten Dunst’s MJ?

If the MCU were to revisit the Maguire’s version of Spider Man – fans, in fact, have been campaigning for a Spider-Man 4 – then it seems more than likely that Dunst could return as MJ to complement his story now that we know their relationship still exists and has more than likely become even more serious than it was last portrayed on screen. Unlike Holland’s Spider-Man, and even in some ways Garfield’s, Dunst’s MJ was always central to the plot of the original Spider-Man trilogy, and Peter Parker was always completely in pursuit of her.

This brings about the question as to how she could return. There are plenty of ways in which this could be done, especially considering the MCU’s dominant focus on the multiverse throughout Phase 4. What’s more, the reception of No Way Home‘s Spider-Man team-up has most likely urged Sony, in some capacity, to take a look at the viability of pursuing Spider-Man 4 and even Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3. With Dunst’s eagerness to return to her character and the franchise, it seems like a no-brainer to at least consider the possibility. With so many MCU projects being released, it’s also likely she could make a smaller cameo in an upcoming multiversal film, giving audiences a clearer update to the status of their relationship. Whatever way this is done, we hope it happens.
