WandaVision’s Billy Actor Reacts to MCU Recast Rumors

WandaVision actor Julian Hillard takes to Twitter to hilariously shut down rumors that Joshua Bassett will be replacing him in the MCU.

The young actor who played Billy Maximoff in WandaVision has responded to rumors that the MCU has recast him. WandaVision was the first official entry in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as being the first of Disney +’s many series spinning off various Marvel characters. The series, which is a pastiche of sitcoms throughout the years, followed Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as she created a fantasy world inside a bubble around the town of Westview, New Jersey. IOn Westview, Wanda resurrects Vision (Paul Bettany) and the pair eventually have two kids together who grow from babies to pre-teens overnight and develop their own powers inherited from their mother and uncle Quicksilver, who was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Billy (Julian Hillard) has Scarlet Witch’s force field powers and Tommy (Jett Klyne) has Quicksilver’s superspeed. The superpowered twins have been confirmed to be reappearing in the MCU in the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhich will be picking up directly after the stories established in Spider-Man: No Way Home spirit WandaVision. Although the characters have been confirmed, the actors have not, and rumors have been swirling that the role of an older Billy has been filled by teen star Joshua Bassett, who stars in the Disney + series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and has achieved notoriety by inspiring the hit Olivia Rodrigo breakup song “Driver’s License.”

On Twitter, Hillard has proven his facility with memes that are most likely older than him when fielding questions about potentially being recast. A user named Danté asked him what it was like to meet his replacement, Bassett, to which Hillard responded with a gif calling the question asker a clown. He also responded to people asking who he’d like to see playing an older Billy with classic “I’m disappointed in you” gifs. Check out his posts below:

Note that this is not necessarily a tacit confirmation that the actor will be playing Billy. The MCU keeps their casting under wraps until they’re ready for the ultimate reveal, as the advertising lead-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home has proven conclusively. However, production on Doctor Strange 2which comes to theaters on May 6, has wrapped, and if Hillard was not in it, he probably would not even be posting in this manner at all.

In universe, it also seems somewhat unlikely that the WandaVision characters would be aged up any further in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although Scarlet Witch certainly possesses the power to make this happen, their rapid aging only occurred because of the specific confluence of magic present in Westview, which was also being driven by the wicked Agatha Harkness. Now that they are out of the bubble, there is no reason for the Maximoff twins to not start aging in a more natural fashion.
