Marvel Was Right To Scrap Black Panther’s Original Namor Credits Scene

Black Panther’s original post-credits scene was going to tease Namor’s MCU arrival, but Marvel made the right decision to scrap the idea.

Namor was originally teased in Black Panther‘s post-credits scene, but Marvel made the right decision to delay his debut. 2018’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie exceeded all expectations and made it a no-brainer that Marvel would continue the franchise. It has now been revealed that director Ryan Coogler wanted to make the franchise’s future abundantly clear, as Black Panther‘s post-credits scene nearly teased Namor as the sequel’s villain. Instead of teasing the arrival of another Marvel king, the MCU used Black Panther‘s end credits to show Bucky waking up in Wakanda with Shuri ahead of Avengers: Infinity War.

The details on Coogler’s cool idea for a Namor post-credits scene in Black Panther have been teased by Kevin Feige. The scrapped Black Panther the post-credits scene was going to show the throne room in Wakanda with wet footprints on the floor leading up to the throne. Namor was not going to appear in the scene, but the indication of the underwater Marvel anti-hero’s arrival would still be clear for comic fans. The scene would have immediately made it clear that Namor would be Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s villain and eliminate any speculation about how Doctor Doom or others could fill that role.

As exciting as it would have been to see the Black Panther Namor post-credits scene, Marvel undoubtedly made the right decision by not moving forward with Coogler’s idea. The events of Black Panther take place about two years before Avengers: Infinity War, but the epic Phase 3 MCU movie was released in theaters less than three months later. That means that Marvel would have had no chance actually to pay off the Namor tease before audiences would see T’Challa and all of Wakanda brought into the thick of the Avengers’ fight against Thanos. It was a much better decision to hold off on the tease by scrapping Black Panther‘s original Namor post-credits scene.

Black Panther’s Namor Post-Credits Would Have Complicated Infinity War

If Marvel had moved forward with Black Panther‘s Namor post-credits scene, it would have created massive complications for Avengers: Infinity War. There is no doubt that the tease would have left fans convinced that Namor would be in Avengers: Infinity War (or even Avengers: Endgame) in some regard. This would have either meant Marvel would be forced to rework the upcoming movie to include Namor or disappoint fans as a result of his absence. Marvel already created big questions about why characters like Ant-Man, Valkyrie, and Adam Warlock were not in Avengers: Infinity War. The tease that Namor would invade Wakanda would also feel less satisfying after seeing Thanos’ army beat him to the punch.

In the end, Marvel saved itself from some major headaches by not teasing Namor in Black Panther‘s post-credits scene. The end of Phase 3 was able to happen without the questions about where Namor is or why he has not invaded Wakanda yet. Instead, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was awarded the freedom to introduce Namor in whichever way best fits the sequel. It also freed up Black Panther and Wakanda to play massive roles in Avengers: Infinity War‘s story. None of this might have been possible if Black Panther‘s original Namor post-credits plan came to fruition.
