We may already have seen some colossal blockbusters so far this year, but some of 2022’s most anticipated event movies are yet to grace the screen. Of course, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is being approached with the highest of expectations.
Ryan Coogler’s 2018 original is one of the most celebrated of all MCU movies and dominated the box office, crowning Chacwick Boseman’s T’Challa as an unforgettable superhero.
The actor’s passing in 2020 was deeply felt by millions and some suspected a sequel to his most iconic effort would be scrapped. However, Wakanda Forever will pay tribute to the character and the phenomenal talent behind the suit.
A recent trailer has encouraged some to speculate that Letitia Wright’s character will take the mantle from now on. With that in mind, did Shuri become Black Panther in any Marvel comics?
Did Shuri ever become Black Panther in comics?
Yes, Marvel confirms that Shuri has previously stepped up to take over as Black Panther in Marvel Comics.
The character debuted in the comics in Black Panther #2 back in 2005 and she made efforts to adopt the prestigious title but was foiled in the ring by another challenger before T’Challa triumphed.
Fast forward to the Dark Reign era of Black Panther – beginning in 2008 – and T’Challa was targeted by Doctor Doom for refusing a sinister opportunity from Norman Osborn. Fighting for his life in a frightening condition, the Black Panther mantle was temporarily handed to Shuri while Queen Ororo ruled Wakanda.
She embarked upon a string of tasks to prove herself capable of taking on such monumental duties. However, an encounter with the Black Panther God Bast led to the figure declaring her unworthy of the mantle due to her arrogance.
Nevertheless, she wasn’t destroyed, as had been the case with other hopefuls prior. Ultimately, Shuri did step up, donning the iconic suit to defeat the villainous Morlun while Storm saved T’Challa.
When he returned to health, T’Challa allowed Shuri to remain as Black Panther, a title she resumed in Klaws of the Panther while T’Challa worked on other things for the kingdom.
Fans think Shuri is Black Panther in Wakanda Forever
At the end of the recent trailer for the long-awaited sequel, we see a mysterious figure swoop down and the Black Panther costume – with a twist – is revealed to the audience.
The character isn’t unmasked so the identity of the new Black Panther isn’t explicitly confirmed.
Yet, many fans are utterly convinced that it’s Shuri and have taken to Twitter to react, noting the markings that foreshadow her taking the mantle:
‘It’s a beautiful contribution to Chadwick’s legacy’
Letitia previously opened up about Chadwick and his impact on Wakanda Forever during a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show:
“I feel, for me, it’s a beautiful contribution to Chadwick’s legacy. I feel like it’s a love letter to him. I know every day that I went on set, I focused my energy on — on each scene to dedicate it to him.”
She added: “I wanted to dedicate excellence to this film so that he could be proud.”
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is in theaters on Friday, November 11th 2022.
