Spider-Man #1 flips the script on Spider-Verse

Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man #1. You’ve been warned. For more on this title, read our review.

Dan Slott is kicking off a new Spider-Man series today with an adjectiveless titled series with Mark Bagley on art that will shake things up. Not only is this the first time in ages there were two Spider-Man ongoing series, but as the trailer for the series shows, Morlun is back.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The main villain in the Spider-Verse events, Morlun is super strong and eats the soul of Spider-Man-centric characters.

Pretty badass right? That’s certainly the case when he pops up in the issue.

That’s not the most shocking thing, though, as the issue features the wasp-themed turned Spider-Man characters making their first move. The big first move involves Spider-Man Noir, and it’s incredibly shocking.

This is a massive loss for the Spidey side of things. Spider-Woman has been impactful in past Spider-Verse events. Oh, and she’s also beloved among fans! Sure, this is comics, and she may not be dead for long, right?

But what if she’s erased from the Great Web entirely? It’s a shock to be sure, but not the final shock of the issue.

A bit later, we learn Morlun wasn’t there to rub it in Spider-Man’s face he was in danger, but here to help the heroes!

We can probably assume Morlun is trying to help Spider-Man and his amazing friends because they are his food source, but who sent him? Is he no longer evil or just helping for now? A lot of questions remain as the issue closes.

Speaking of the issue, I highly recommend you read the entire issue. There’s a lot of great action, Slott puts in tons of character work for the characters, and the final cliffhanger shows the heroes are in big trouble.

You can purchase Spider-Man #1 in comic shops, or online.
