James Gunn debunks a claim about Groot’s size in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Two separate characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot has been a part of the Guardians team since the first installment. An extraterrestrial, tree-like figure, he began as a companion to Rocket, and his death at the end of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy resulted in the birth of Baby Groot. Since then, audiences have watched as a new version of the character was explored through several films, his own series of animated shorts, and the newly released The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3set to be released on May 5, 2023, Groot and the rest of the team will embark on another mission to protect both the universe and each other.
Now, franchise director Gunn continues to remind fans that the MCU’s current Groot is not the same character they saw in the first movie. Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’s Groot Explained
Going all the way back to the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, audiences will recall that the original Groot died while saving the group. As Gunn confirms, the character seen in recent projects is his offspring, brought to life after Rocket planted pieces of his body. Baby Groot quickly became a favorite in the MCU, and in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, fans got to see more of his adolescence. To the surprise of many, the character was noticeably bigger The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialwhich might have led to the speculation surrounding his size and possible age.
It is worth mentioning that Groot never retained any of his father’s memories, further establishing the two versions as separate individuals, so the Groot that will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now Rocket’s adopted son and is still continuing to grow. While it may seem like the character is on his way to resembling the original’s form, there are some slight differences, mainly with his body and the shape of his head. Gunn also points out the transformation shown in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialturning to social media again to verify that “Swollen Groot” does have a sturdier build compared to his father.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 likely concluding the stories of its main group, it will be interesting to see how much further Groot evolves. Audiences are already bracing for an emotional final installment and possible deaths, but many are wondering what will happen to Groot if he survives. Vin Diesel, who famously portrays the character, previously revealed that Marvel wanted to make a film about Groot’s home planet, and should that come to fruition, fans may get to learn even more about the figure and others like him.
