Marvel Already Confirmed Bucky’s Arm’s Fate After GOTG Holiday Special

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has a surprising reveal about Bucky Barnes’ arm, but Marvel has already shown what happens to it next.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.Rocket Raccoon gets Bucky Barnes’ arm as a Christmas present in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but Marvel already confirmed the limb’s fate. When Bucky and Rocket first met Avengers: Infinity War, the latter very clearly admired the former’s weapons, asking him about buying his gun and then his arm. At the time it seemed like a throwaway joke, but now it raises some big questions about the MCU and what’s going to happen to Bucky in the future.

Nebula giving Bucky’s arm to Rocket in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is fun payoff to the Infinity War gag, but is a mysterious one too. Just how did Nebula get her hands on Bucky’s arm? What does it mean for Bucky himself? The first question may be explored further in the MCU’s future, although James Gunn said Nebula got Rocket’s present by going to Earth and tearing Bucky’s arm off his body (which isn’t exactly out of character). In terms of the second point, there shouldn’t be much impact on the former Winter Soldier. As seen in Thunderbolts concept art, Bucky’s arm is still very much attached to his body in the MCU’s Phase 5.

Will Bucky’s Arm Factor Into Thunderbolts’ Story?

new arm for bucky thunderbolt's team

Bucky’s arm could possibly factor into Thunderbolts‘ story, but it would presumably only be brief if so, such as a quick reference to him getting a new one or a joke about what happened with Nebula. Bucky’s role with the MCU’s Thunderbolts team would almost certainly necessitate him having his Vibranium arm, since it’s one of his most powerful weapons and helps to make him a key part of the lineup. It could reveal Nebula got a replica, but even if Gunn’s version of events are canon going forward, it’s difficult to imagine Bucky being without his arm and he could get a replacement (or Rocket could return it).

Phase 4 Has Revealed Bucky’s Arm Has Key Weaknesses

Bucky’s arm was surprisingly important in Marvel’s Phase 4, especially in terms of how it factored into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Disney+ show proved just how strong and valuable it is, with Bucky’s arm enhancing his own abilities and giving some additional ones, such as the same ability to not only absorb impact, but turn that back against an opponent as seen with T’Challa’s Black Panther suit. However, Bucky’s arm also has some key weaknesses. John Walker caused Bucky’s arm to malfunction by throwing him into energy cables, confirming electrical surges can damage it; and it was also revealed Bucky is right-handed, meaning his arm isn’t on the strongest side of his body.

Biggest of all, there is a failsafe built-in by the Wakandans, which allows Ayo to very swiftly detach it; With these weaknesses, then it’s even more plausible Nebula could have ripped Bucky’s arm from off his body, as it certainly isn’t without its flaws. It’s also interesting to link the pair, given Nebula’s body has so many cybernetic enhancements that would allow her to take Bucky’s arm. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialthen, is extra fun payoff to Phase 4’s exploration of Bucky’s arm, but Thunderbolts in Phase 5 should not only restore it, but continue to show just how powerful it really is.
