Secret Wars star Samuel L Jackson responds to Quentin Tarantino’s criticism of Marvel stars

Avengers star Samuel L Jackson has responded to regular collaborator Quentin Tarantino’s comments about Marvel movies.

Jackson has appeared in six of the filmmaker’s features, beginning with Pulp Fiction in 1994.

Tarantino recently told the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast: “Part of the Marvel-isation of Hollywood is… you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters.

“But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star.

“I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times… but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star,” Tarantino further explained.

Jackson was asked about Tarantino’s remarks during an appearance on The View. The Oscar-nominated actor said: “Okay, well it takes an actor to be those particular characters. And the sign of movie stardom has always been, what, arses in seats? What are we talking about?

“So, it’s not a big controversy for me to know that, well, apparently, these actors are movie stars. You know, Chadwick Boseman IS Black Panther. You can’t refute that. And he’s a movie star.”

Since 2008’s Iron ManJackson has played the role of SHIELD director Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this wasn’t the first time he’s leapt to the studio’s defense.

Earlier in the year, responding to remarks made by Hollywood legends Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, Jackson said: “All movies are valid. Some go to the cinema to be moved dearly. Some like superheroes.

“If somebody has more butts on seats it just means your audience is not as broad. There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a T-shirt .

“They should have an Oscar for the most popular movie,” the star suggested. “Because that’s what the business is about.”
