These are not exactly the efforts Florida and Florida State had in mind for their end-of-season rivalry.
The Gators and Seminoles both participate in Saturday’s showdown 5-6, meaning the winner will be bowl-qualified. It is one of four matches next weekend that pits two five-winning teams against each other. The others are Maryland-Rutgers, Charlotte-Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic-Middle Tennessee.
There is enough room for 82 FBS teams to play in bowls this season. Right now, 72 teams have already secured bowl eligibility. The winners of the four games listed above bring the total to 76 and there are plenty of other teams that are also a win from bowl eligibility. This year, when there have not been enough six-winning teams to fill all the places, teams with lost records have been allowed to play.
