Brockton firefighter injured after falling through stairs in burning home

The 8-year-old veteran firefighter tried to return to help get the fire under control after suffering minor injuries.

A Brockton Fire Department unit responded to a fire in a home on Tilton Ave. Tuesday. During the process of getting the fire under control, a firefighter fell through a burned staircase that went up to the second floor all the way to the basement, WBZ reported.

A Mayday was called when the firefighter fell, It was reported by Boston 25 News. ‘They actually had to tell him he was going to stop. He should go back and start working again, ”said boss Brian Nardelli. “I’m very grateful for the people I have.”

Residents were not home when the fire started. WCVB reported, and thus they arrived at a scene heavy with fire and smoke.

The unnamed firefighter who fell was able to get out of the basement with only minor damage to the lower extremities. He was then taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton to be evaluated.

“I was right with him about five minutes ago … he’s fine, he’s laughing and joking,” Nardelli said in an interview with WBZ.

The Brockton Fire Department tweeted a picture of the stairs themselves.
