Burglary of TxDOT facilities knocks out some traffic cameras

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Texas Department of Transportation says it has experienced several facility burglaries, and some have actually knocked out traffic camera systems.

TxDOT says so far there have been no arrests. The Austin Police Department is in charge of the investigation.

The department says that even though it does not know who is breaking in, there are signs that some of the burglars are homeless. They say that in addition to items being damaged or stolen, there is evidence that people are breaking in to charge cell phones and use space heaters.

While TxDOT says it has taken temporary steps to block the doors to these buildings, it is looking for more long-term solutions.
