CGU – University Ombudsperson
PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The University Ombudsperson serves as an independent and
confidential resource for faculty, staff, students, and other members of the campus community with complaints and concerns relating to
conflict within the institution. The position provides impartial and informal assistance to visitors including: information about
university processes and resources, conflict coaching, facilitation for difficult conversations, mediation of conflict, and upward feedback
regarding systemic trends and issues. The CGU Ombuds Office practices in accordance with the standards of the International Ombudsman
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. In an informal and neutral
environment, assists faculty, staff, students, and other members of the campus community in problem-solving and conflict resolution by
offering resources and information, listening impartially and supportively, and helping people to develop options.

4. Assists in conflict resolution, mediates and
engages in informal shuttle diplomacy for internal resolution where appropriate and possible.

6. Advocates for and represents no individual, group, or office, but advocates for
just and fair application of policies and procedures throughout the CGU community.
7. Performs other essential duties and tasks
specific to the position.
NON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Attends meetings of campus groups and makes presentations to
advance the visibility and presence of the Ombuds Office and its services.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be
able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other
combination of skills and abilities.

3. Using only aggregate statistical data, must have ability to generate reports on activities and trends while
maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the Ombuds Office.
4. Must have ability to learn quickly and understand all
aspects of university life and operations.
5. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
EDUCATION: Bachelor of Arts degree, Master’s degree preferred or any combination of education and experience meeting
EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of relevant experience (e.g. as an ombuds or in mediation and conflict resolution)
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid California driver’s license and meet the authorized driver’s requirements.
OTHER PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicants working in higher education with diverse population, conflict
resolution, and advice and counseling experience. Ideally, the University Ombudsperson is a member of the International Ombudsman
Association, and practices in accordance with its Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
HOURS: The regular
hours for this position is one day per week (7.5 hours). Hours may vary due to needs of the University or department.
AND STATUS: This is a (part-time), 12-month (non-exempt level) position.
