Chicago brand rescue group lieutenant Kelly Severide is newly engaged to Stella Kidd, but their wedding will not be the first time the firefighter has taken the trip down the aisle.
As longtime fans of the NBC drama will remember, Severide was back in season 3 associated with a graphic designer named Brittany Baker (played by Serinda Swan) in Las Vegas that he had just met at the craps table. But the couple’s marriage ended just as quickly as it began when they both realized they were rushing into the relationship to escape the death of a loved one. Despite their romance being short, Brittany still made a lasting impression on viewers.
For TV veterinarian Swan, who also starred in the past Fire showrunner Matt Olmsteads A&E drama Breakout Kings, it was about persevering for the right character. “Matt kept asking me to come and [guest-star] on the show in my offseason from Graceland, ”Swan, who is currently headlining the CW series Doctors, tells TVLine. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I would love that!'”
The producers then went on to put the actor in various roles that did not quite work until they finally landed on the perfect part. “They say, ‘So there’s this girl and she’s trapped,’ and I’m claustrophobic,” Swan recalls. And then, ‘There’s a woman, and there’s a burning building,’ and I was super scared of fire. Finally, they say, ‘Severide’s love interest,’ and I was like, ‘Yep, let’s do it!’ “
As it turns out, Swan and Fire leading man Taylor Kinney had in fact already worked together before when he impressed in “a really little guest star [role] on [Breakout Kings], ”Notes the actor. “We were all like, ‘Yo, he’s amazing. Like he’s really, really good. And then apparently Matt talked to him and made him move on Chicago brand. ”
However, Brittany did not stay long in Windy City and suddenly left the city (and her hubby) after only four episodes to confront her past. “[I] had to leave so fast because I had to move on to the next season of Graceland, that not everything was tied properly, ”says Swan. “So I kept making all these messages sound like, ‘When are you coming back? We know you’ll be back. You’re still married, ‘and I was like,’ I actually don ‘t think I’ll ever come back because I’m shooting something for seven months. I do not think it happens. ‘”
Although many years have passed since the Swan’s short bow and Severide told his now-engaged Stella in an episode of season 6 that he and Brittany got a cancellation- “people still ask me about it all the time,” the actor reveals, adding that she “would be down for [Brittany] just randomly show up one season and stir things up a bit for him again. ”
Chicago brand Season 10 premieres on Wednesday 22 September at 9 / 8c on NBC, which is again broadcast between With and PD
