Crazy Cakes opens in Port Washington

Gone are the days when Erica Tiger served her sweet indulgences through a food truck window. Since Crazy Cakes food truck’s launch in 2013, she’s grown out of that space and now delivers baked goods at a premier Main Street location in Port Washington that was last occupied by Brick Osteria.

Tiger, who mostly worked in banking, said she learned the trade when she had children, by making extravagant birthday cakes for those who quickly gained ground among family and friends. “After a while, you know, my family wanted the kitchen back,” she said. Over the years, she went from experimenting with cake mixes in boxes to making her own recipes.

The spacious cafe has a menu of chocolate-covered delicacies – Oreos, Rice Krispies, pretzels and marshmallows; oversized flavored cookies, such as chocolate chip chips and oatmeal raisins; plus muffins. Waffles and crepes are coming soon.

Customers can make their own cupcake ($ 1.75- $ 4.50) by choosing from today’s selection of cake flavors, which have included red velvet, strawberry, banana, chocolate and vanilla. Then choose one of almost 20 icing flavors (dulce de leche, salted chocolate, fudge, lemon and cannoli among them); and fillings (50 cents), including whipped cream and ganache. Creations can be topped on the display wall of sprinkles and candy.

On the beverage front, there are hot drinks, including coffee, tea and cocoa, as well as chilled as bubble tea, egg cream, frozen hot chocolate and half lemonade-half iced tea.

Half of the cafe is dedicated to a seating area that on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday becomes a party room where guests can make their own pizzas and pastries with friends. Crazy Cakes is nut-free and also caters to other dietary restrictions, such as milk-free, vegan and gluten-free. “Kids do not want to stand out … they do not like to feel different,” Tiger said of the accommodation. Special cakes and cupcakes can be ordered with one week’s notice.

Crazy Cakes is at 52 Main St. in Port Washington. It is open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m .; Wednesdays to Saturdays from kl. 10.00 to kl. 19.00; and Sundays from kl. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 516-462-7299.
