The Position:
Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, School of Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics, beginning August 6, 2021, at San Diego City College. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

One of the three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus, located in East Village and is within walking distance of historic Balboa Park, the nationally-known Gaslamp Quarter, and San Diego’s central business area. THE POSITION
The Dean for the School of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics reports to the Vice President, Instruction and Vice President, Student Services and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating instructional and co-curricular programs in close cooperation with department chairs. This includes the coordination and supervision of class schedules, and faculty teaching assignments, curriculum development, staff development, and budget. The dean is involved in the hiring of staff, academic and classified, and in their evaluation. The dean is expected to establish and maintain connections with relevant community and professional organizations as well as participates in college governance and decision-making. The dean provides oversight of fund-raising via the San Diego City College Foundation and is expected to oversee and comply with the Constitution of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), and provide administrative support and supervision to college athletic teams during day, late afternoon, evening, and weekend on/off campus contests and activities.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, manage and evaluate an assigned instructional or instructional support program in accordance with legal requirements, District policies and sound instructional/guidance principles and practices.
  • Establish overall objectives and plans; initiate, coordinate program review, assess needs for implementation of new programs and curricula, and facilitate their development within established guidelines and budgets.
  • Direct the evaluation of facilities and equipment and recommend improvements.
  • Communicate and interpret program objectives and offerings to potential students, other two-year and four-year institutions, community organizations, students, staff, instructors and others.
  • Screen, interview, select, assign, supervise and evaluate regular and substitute faculty and staff; plan, coordinate and provide orientation and in-service education for professional development of assigned staff.
  • Prepare staff assignments and schedules; assign work location in accordance with established District policy.
  • Develop annual budget recommendations according to established procedures; monitor and control assigned program budgets; initiate special fund requests.
  • Serve as a member of District, site or other committees and task forces; maintain liaison with other site and District administration to assure proper coordination of activities; promote sharing of ideas and communication of successful operating practices with others in similar positions inside and outside the District.
  • Represent the District and participate at the local, State and national levels in organizations and activities that improve, promote and publicize District instructional/instructional support programs.
  • Coordinate and direct special projects as assigned; initiate studies and conduct analyses as necessary to determine the need for new or modified course offerings, programs or services.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations as necessary; assure the preparation, distribution and maintenance of required reports, records and files.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the resolution of student, instructor and staff conflicts, complaints and grievances.
  • Establish and maintain connections with relevant community and professional organizations
  • Provide oversight of fund-raising via the San Diego City College Foundation.
  • Oversee compliance with the Constitution of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA),
  • Provide administrative support and supervision to the Colleges athletic teams
  • Assure timely development of class schedule; direct the review and revision of materials for college catalog.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Possession of a Masters degree from a regionally accredited institution; AND
  2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators assignment.

OR,

Possession of a lifetime California Community College Supervisor Credential AND two years of recent management experience in an institution of higher education. NOTE: All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions.

  • Knowledge of the disciplines included in the School of Health and Exercise Science and Athletics
  • Demonstrated ability to work with school faculty to develop and implement strategies for effective enrollment management and student success
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain high standards of instruction by providing leadership in establishing goals /objectives, and in using innovative methods of delivery (including instructional technology and distance education).
  • Ability to provide leadership to faculty for developing strategies that promote students success through improved transfer rates, degree and certificate completion rates, basic skills acquisition rates, and other types of enrollment goals.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the curriculum development process.
  • Experience with preparing and managing a departmental budget.
  • Knowledge of and experience with working in a participatory governance environment.
  • Evidence of demonstrated value for student success and equity in setting priorities and implementing school and institutional goals.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating a comprehensive athletics program.
  • Experience with fund raising at various levels.
  • Experience with coordinating the selection, use, and maintenance of equipment and facilities assigned to the school.
  • Ability to assess departmental facility needs, develop a plan, and advocate for future resources.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate, applicable District, State, Federal, and CCCAA regulations, standards, and requirements.
  • Experience assisting in the articulation of transfer requirements and working with 4-year college coaches and compliance officers to assist with the transfer of student athletes to four-year colleges and universities.
  • Experience with developing team schedules and supporting the execution of home contests as well as team travel.
  • Ability to provide effective coordination, supervision, encouragement, and support to faculty and staff.
  • Evidence of ability to promote partnerships and remain current on all information relative to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and other governing athletics agencies.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience with supporting college efforts through participation on accreditation teams.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication.
  • Administrative or faculty experience in a higher education setting.

Licenses:
Valid California drivers license (will be verified at time of hire, please do not upload) [If possess] A California Community College Supervisor Credential AND two years of recent management experience in an institution of higher education.

Pay Information:
Range 18 ($9,033.99 $14,485.37) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.
