Role of Dean

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and sets its vision and
strategy. The Dean provides leadership in student, faculty and staff matters, academic programs, budgeting, internal and external relations
and strategic planning within the School. The Dean works closely with the President, Provost and other senior University leaders in
advancing the values, vision and mission of the American University in Cairo.

Key aspects of the role include, but are not limited


  • Setting a vision for the School in an increasingly competitive, global and dynamic
    higher education environment; 
  • Building the international image and reputation of the School;
  • Developing a compelling
    strategy for the School, leading strategic academic planning processes while ensuring active involvement of faculty.


  • Fostering the research capabilities, nurturing environment and research productivity of the
  • Promoting exceptional and innovative teaching focused on student engagement; 
  • Maintaining and seeking additional
    accreditation for the School and its programs;
  • Fostering a positive work and study environment for students, faculty, and

Faculty, Staff and Student Relations 

  • Fostering a collaborative
  • Establishing strategies to enhance the School’s ability to recruit high calibre faculty and staff;
  • Promoting a
    positive and supportive environment for student success.

Management and Administration

  • Effectively
    managing the School’s budget, ensuring appropriate academic, physical, and fiscal support; 
  • Encouraging a sense of collegiality in
    staff and faculty administrative duties;
  • Development of a high performing leadership team, including Associate Deans, Chairs and

Stakeholder Relations 

  • Lead successful fundraising activities for the
  • Advocating externally for the School with government and other stakeholders, ensuring that the School is differentiated
    amongst its competitors and recognized for its unique strengths and values;
  • Building strong, productive and collaborative
    relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including alumni, the broader university, the global affairs community, and


Candidate Qualifications
While the search committee recognizes that no
one individual will possess all of these qualifications in equal measure, the following are seen to be particularly important. 


  • A distinguished track record of achievement in academia and or public service;
  • Strong
    decision making and critical thinking skills;
  • Extensive managerial and budgetary experience; 
  • Experience balancing
    consultation and consensus-seeking with difficult decision-making;
  • A strong background in strategic planning, with a record of
    success in developing and rallying teams around a compelling vision; 
  • Knowledge of the Egyptian and broader Middle Eastern contexts
    and a global mind-set and networks;
  • The ability to engage in advancement activities intended to enhance the academic and financial
    strength of the School; 
  • A demonstrated interest in the areas and disciplines represented by the School; 
  • The capacity to
    respond to the needs of an active and diverse student and faculty population in a rapidly changing higher education landscape.
