Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley’s excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, data management, gift services, fund management, reporting and analytics, and donor recognition, as well as talent management and workforce planning.

Position Overview

The Student Experience & Diversity (SED) Philanthropy program is designed to raise funds, and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for alumni, parents and friends contributing philanthropically to the holistic success of Berkeley students. The Student Experience & Diversity program primarily raises major gift funds in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, and equity and inclusion. The SED Program interfaces with a broad range of divisions and academic units on campus, with a focus on the priorities of the divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Undergraduate Education, and Student Affairs.

The SED program serves a strategic focal point for fundraising across three divisions, to maximize major gifts. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for ensuring that the fundraising goals for the assigned divisions are met, while creating strategic fundraising plans for emerging priority programs, and serving as content leader for specific divisional priorities.

This position works directly with senior university officials including Associate Vice Chancellors, Deans, high-level donors and volunteers. He/she is expected to solicit gifts directly and to work closely with some of the university’s most important donors and to maintain excellent relations with divisional colleagues.


Plans, organizes, and directs fundraising campaign strategy focused on SED priorities and which include multiple components.

  • Identify and evaluate potential major donors, including implementing strategies to uncover additional major gift prospects in the region (e.g. rating and screening lists)
  • Design and implement customized, donor-specific cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Make discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship calls (conduct 10-15 prospect visits/significant moves per month, managing an average of 100 – 150 prospects per year at the major gift level)
  • Utilize central resources such as Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, as appropriate
  • Comply with University policies regarding managing prospects, updating CADS database and other policies
  • As necessary, manage and cultivate top volunteers
  • Write proposals for solicitation of individual prospects

Results have a major impact on the overall goals of the program, and assignments are typically at the major gifts level of 100K+ rating and may also include prospects at the emerging principal gifts of $2M rating and above. This is a position requiring a range of skills from discovery and cold-call skills to an ability to work with experienced philanthropists.

  • Serve as an expert or lead development professional for specific divisional priorities.
  • Assist divisional partners/programs with strategies, notices opportunities for collaboration and maintain good working relationships with campus units
  • Gather and understand unit priorities and activities
  • Oversee information-sharing with unit colleagues (e.g., create and facilitate working group meetings with other development staff to share information and build collaborative relationships)
  • Serve on internal/external committees as campus representative, as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including current issues of concern for both the campus and throughout higher education generally.
  • Expert knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Expert knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
  • Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.
  • Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and in securing gifts.
  • Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
  • Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
