The College of Literature, Science and Arts has an immediate opening for the Director of Faculty Academic Affairs reporting to the Chief of Staff and sitting on the Dean’s Cabinet.  This role provides a high level of administrative leadership for the college’s Academic Affairs team within LSA’s Office of the Dean, which includes the offices of Faculty Academic Affairs and Graduate Education. The Director of Faculty Academic Affairs works closely with LSA’s three LSA Divisional Associate Deans as their strategic partner, providing senior support on the development and implementation of projects, policies, and initiatives.

While this position will primarily work from our central campus in Ann Arbor, LSA does offer flexible work options consistent with the business needs of the role.


  • Serve as the administrative leader for faculty academic affairs in the college, to include overseeing processes related to tenure-track faculty including recruitment, promotion, leaves, tenure, retention, retirement, dual career, faculty and chair professional development, and faculty honors/awards
  • Support and partner with the Divisional Associate Deans on all matters within their portfolios, including researching, benchmarking, writing reports and communications, and gathering data
  • Engage in academic human resources activity related to faculty grievances and disciplinary actions
  • Serve as a member of the dean’s cabinet and provide leadership and strategic support in the planning, direction, execution, and evaluation of programs, projects, policy, support, services, and college initiatives
  • Provide administrative leadership for the the offices of faculty academic affairs and graduate education, including supervising staff in those units and stewarding the academic affairs budget
  • Provide oversight to the LSA Executive Committee and Divisional Committees in matters regarding faculty affairs and faculty governance
  • Organize and oversee external reviews of LSA units
  • Lead and execute improvement efforts to streamline administrative procedures and data management in the area of faculty academic affairs, including tracking of tenure schedules, sabbaticals and other leaves, faculty recruitment, faculty retentions and departures, as well as general faculty record keeping and reporting
  • Oversee college website information on faculty academic affairs, ensuring accuracy and availability of policies and information
  • Create a work environment that fosters respect and dignity, regardless of roles, responsibilities or differences
  • Represent LSA on university committees, and engage in other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

The Director of Faculty Academic Affairs must be exceptionally well-organized and attentive to detail and highly skilled at building and maintaining rapport with a wide variety of constituents. This role involves work that is sensitive and/or confidential in nature and requires discretion, independent judgment, and sound decision-making skills. Candidates should also understand the challenges and opportunities of a large, complex organization and have the following:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in complex organization(s); prior administrative experience in higher education is an advantage
  • Careful attention to detail and accuracy
  • Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong background in process and policy development and or implementation; ability to quickly acquire thorough knowledge of college and university policies
  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and complex situations, making independent judgments, recommending courses of action, and balancing competing priorities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong ability to work with a wide variety of constituents
  • Experience handling confidential matters with integrity; ability to resolve conflict situations and respond thoughtfully to sensitive situations
  • Experience leading people and teams, including delegation to and supervision of professional staff
  • Ability to organize assigned tasks, prioritize heavy workload, delegate tasks, and develop comprehensive timetables and strategies to meet multiple and changing deadlines
  • Reasonable knowledge of the design and application of information technology in delivering service and managing data
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the ability to foster a positive culture characterized by respect, collaboration, and attention to well-being

Desired Qualifications*

These desired qualifications are an advantage: 

  • Knowledge of academic affairs and experience in managing the recruitment, retention, and promotion aspects of faculty administration
  • Understanding of faculty governance and/or knowledge of graduate education administration
  • Considerable knowledge of university organization is highly desirable

Additional Information

The salary range is $100,668 to $125,836, with a higher salary possible for well-qualified applicants.
