A. POSITION PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Dean and the direction of the Sr. Assistant Dean through a dotted line reporting structure, the Director of Spiritual Formation is responsible for the successful promotion, development and administration of the Spiritual Formation Program and Liturgical Life at the Jesuit School of Theology, located in Berkeley, California.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop and implement a formal Spiritual Formation Program with JST-SCU to support all members of the community

  • Provide programming that supports all members of the community including faculty, staff, in-person students, and online students.
  • Provide programming that supports academic programs at JST.
  • Provide programming that supports enrollment efforts at JST.
  • Plan an annual cycle of spiritual formation events and programs.
  • Prepare an annual budget for approval.
  • Develop strategic plan for the Spiritual Formation Program.
  • Develop annual assessment processes for Spiritual Formation that align with Strategic Plan for the Program; prepare related reports as requested by the Dean or Sr. Assistant Dean.

2. Provide Spiritual Direction including direction according to the Ignatian tradition to the JST community

  • Provide spiritual direction through retreats, programs, and direct guidance.
  • Develop policies, practices and procedures to identify and hire spiritual directors, practices and procedures that align with SCU’s existing administrative structure.
  • Recruit, hire, and manage spiritual directors.
  • Create programs to prepare spiritual directors, including direction according to the Ignatian tradition, in collaboration with JST academic program directors.

3. Oversee all aspects of liturgical planning and implementation

  • Collaborate with the Rector of the Jesuit Community and the JST Dean to coordinate the liturgical life of the school.
  • Involve students as much as possible, ensure planning of daily and special liturgies mindful of the rich diversity that is represented in the JST community.
  • Recruit and oversee sacristans for Chapel.
  • Hire musicians as needed for regular and special liturgies.
  • Oversee Chapel upkeep.
  • Maintain music library and music subscriptions and licensing.
  • Leverage technology and emerging practices to make liturgy accessible to JST’s growing online student population.

4. Collaborate with JST and SCU Stakeholders to advance JST’s mission

  • Coordinate programming with the Director of Ministerial Formation and the Assistant Dean of Student Life.
  • Collaborate with SCU’s newly formed division of Mission and Ministry.
  • Collaborate with internal constituencies at JST and the main campus to develop and implement a strategic plan for Spiritual Formation at JST.
  • Serve as an effective and respected colleague and team member at JST.
  • Facilitate, spiritual life of Lay Intentional Communities (e.g., Jean Donovan Community) and assist in developing additional opportunities for intentional community living.
  • Oversee and coordinate provision of spiritual formation resources to alumni, benefactors and the larger community; collaborate in this area with Director of External Relations.
  • Establish and operationalize formal Advisory Board in a way that fits with the strategic vision and priorities of the Spiritual Formation Program and of JST.
  • Collaborate with the Development Office in consultation with the Dean to identify benefactors.

May at times provide work direction for Graduate Student Assistants and part-time spiritual directors.

  • Recommend initiatives and implement changes to improve quality and services.
  • Identify and determine cause of problems; develop and present recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
  • Maintain contact with participants/applicants and solicit feedback for improved services.
  • Maximize productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
  • Research and develop resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
  • Prepare progress reports; inform supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.

E. QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duties satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred. This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment, as well as the ability to protect the confidentiality of communications.

1. Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Ignatian spiritual traditions
  • Knowledge of and experience in providing and supervising spiritual direction
  • Knowledge of and experience in planning and coordinating liturgy
  • Understanding of Catholic higher education and ministry/theology degrees
  • Broad exposure to Catholic religious life and Catholic ministries
  • Broad familiarity with Hispanic/Latin American culture in US or globally
  • Understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion practices

2. Skills

  • Ability to represent JST’s mission, identity and spiritual formation programs to internal and external constituencies
  • Strong organizational and general administration skills, including budget management and planning
  • Ability to provide retreat planning and implementation
  • Ability to provide spiritual direction, including in the Ignatian spiritual tradition
  • Ability to provide liturgical planning and implementation
  • Fluency in one language other than English, especially Spanish, strongly preferred

3. Abilities

  • Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and in particular with communities of color
  • Strong ability as pastoral and/or spiritual advisor
  • Strong ability in critical thinking, problem solving and communication
  • Excellent judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality; sound interpersonal judgment
  • Early-adopter attitude toward ever-evolving technology and willingness to learn new applications and systems
  • Ability to exercise judgement
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to initiate new programs to meet JST’s evolving needs

4. Education

  • MDiv or equivalent required; PhD or DMin preferred.

5. Years of Experience

  • Requires five to six years of experience working in spiritual direction and/or liturgical leadership; past experience in academic administration or faculty service is preferred.
