Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Suffers Massive Box Office Drop

After a hugely successful opening, the latest figures show Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has suffered a massive drop at the domestic box office.

According to Variety, while the film earned $ 90 million on its opening day, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film earned approximately $ 16.7 million on the Friday of its second weekend, marking a sizeable 81% drop.

Despite the drop, the film is undoubtedly a major hit, crossing the $ 500 million mark in its first week worldwide. Thus far, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has earned $ 230.8 million domestically, at the time of writing, and is expected to cross $ 300 million in the coming week.

The clear success of the film has already inspired Disney executives and investors. CEO Bob Chapek recently used the film as an example of the continued vitality of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the potential Disney and Marvel films have, even without access to markets such as China – which used to be necessary in order to cross the $ 1 billion field.

Chapek stated, “We’ve got a long track record of success and a strong fan base for our brands and franchises in this market … We’ll continue to submit our films for release. And it is worth noting, I think, though, that at the time that we are having some difficulty in getting our films in China, that Doctor Strange did extraordinarily well. ” The Disney head then added, “So we’re pretty confident that even without China, if it were to be that we continue to have difficulties in getting titles in there, that it does not really preclude our success given the relatively lower take rate that we get on the box office in China than we do across the rest of the world. “

The Doctor Strange sequel faced issues in several territories, including China, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt, for reasons mainly pertaining to the inclusion of LGBTQ + characters in the film. This came as no surprise to star Benedict Cumberbatch, who previously said, “We’ve come to know from those repressive regimes that their lack of tolerance is exclusionary to people who deserve to be not only included, but celebrated for who they are and made to feel part of a society and a culture and not punished for their sexuality. “

The star added, “It feels truly out of step with everything that we’ve experienced as a species, let alone where we’re at globally more as a culture, but frankly, it’s just even more reason why this isn’t tokenism to include an LGBTQ + community member. “

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is playing in theaters now.
