It may take longer than expected thanks to a Warner Bros. lawsuit and the pandemic, but George Miller will soon start production Angry, a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road who will map the origins of Imperator Furiosa before she became one of Immortan Joe’s war captains and met Max Rockatansky in the 2015 film. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Furiosa in prequel, and it looks like we may have Edgar Wright to thank for landing the role.
In Empire’s Celebration of Edgar Wright issue, the director came along Mad Max director George Miller, who brought that moment Wright convinced him to cast Anya Taylor-Joy in the film. Miller had seen an early cut of Wrights Last night in Soho, which served as his first introduction to the actor.
I had known Anya, but I had never seen her in a movie before I saw her inside Soho. And I remember thinking, ‘Well, she’s interesting.’ I started saying to you, ‘I’m looking for someone to cast like Furiosa,’ and I barely got the sentence out before you said, ‘Go no further, she’s amazing, she’s going to be huge. She is great to work with. ‘You were so emphatic about it.
That was all George Miller needed to get the ball rolling in the audition process for Anya Taylor-Joy, who involved playing a scene from Network. “I said to her, ‘I want you to do a very simple test that reads something to the camera.’ And that was the speech from Network. ‘I’m crazy as hell’ speech,“Miller explained. “Aside from the brilliance of the font, it is a piece that can be made into a camera. It does not need an actor partner. Anya made a version that was really good. Then I just gave her a few simple notes on intention and she just absolutely nailed it [it]“
Anya Taylor-Joy is joined by Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Angry, which is set to a June 23, 2023 release. We will then see Taylor-Joy in Edgar Wrights Last night in Soho on October 29, 2021.
