Eternal’s post-credit scene sets up the Secret Invasion crossover

Eternal did not have much of an impact when it hit theaters in November last year, but since its Disney + debut, the Phase 4 movie has gotten Marvel fans talking.

Whether it’s the Cliffhanger ending or Harry Styles’ surprising arrival, Eternal teases several directions for the future of the MCU, and this, of course, leads to a lot of speculation about what comes next. We’re still waiting Eternals 2 needs to be confirmed, but a scene teases potentially that we will soon see certain characters again.

The mid-credit scene teases the involvement of Eros (Styles) in the sequel, yet it is the post-credit scene with Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) that could have a more immediate impact on an upcoming project.

If you need a refresher, watch the scene Dane examine Ebony Blade, which comic book fans will know eventually leads to his Black Knight transformation. Before he can touch it, a voice outside the screen asks him, “Are you sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

After the release of Eternal in November, director Chloé Zhao confirmed that the voice was none other than Mahershala Ali in his MCU debut (of the kind) as Blade. This is an adaptation of Dane’s comic book origins, where he first met Blade after he became the Black Knight, but it teases an exciting team-up.

In the comics, both Black Knight and Blade are members of the fictional spy agency MI-13, in fact the British version of SHIELD, which aims to deal with weird shit happening in the country.

This included a cartoon race called Captain Britain and MI-13 who saw the agency fight Skrulls after the events in Secret invasion. Blade first joined the team at number five after defeating Skrulls, but that prompted him to work with the Black Knight to combat other threats, including Dracula (yep, really).

Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham

We know it Secret invasion gets its own TV adaptation coming to Disney + in late 2022. The series brings back, among others, Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos to fight Skrulls, who has secretly infiltrated Earth.

It is not easy to say that the events of the series could lead to the MCU’s version of MI-13, although it is unlikely that an MCU version of MI-13 would faithfully follow the events of Captain Britain and MI-13 race. Even by Marvel standards, it’s beautiful out there, and there are just too many characters to introduce.

But the thought of that Secret invasion could crossover with MI-13 is not as strange as you might think. Marvel fans have long believed that the MCU was creating the arrival of MI-13 in Phase 4.

IN Avengers: Endgamewe saw Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) mention “Braddock”, a nod to Brian or James Braddock, who was Captain Britain in the comics. There’s even an extra crossover with Captain Britain and MI-13, as that series brought back Merlin, who was the one who gave Captain Britain his extraordinary powers.

Although the MCU did not want to introduce this version of Captain Britain, What if…? so did Peggy Carter take on a Captain Britain-like role in another universe. She was never called that by name, but fans would easily accept that this alternative Peggy became Captain Britain.

Spider-Man: Far from home also got a nod to MI-13 when it saw Nick Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) hang out in the Shard. After Captain Britain and MI-13 drove off, the Secret Agency eventually moved their headquarters to Shard in the cartoon.

Add in Eternal post-credit scene teasing the arrival of Black Knight and Blade, and it’s no wonder fans think MI-13 is on its way. Will it be the (potentially) game-changing events of Secret invasion which led to its formation in the MCU? It is not entirely outside the realm of opportunity.

There’s probably a reason MCU has changed the origins of the Black Knights, and given the intertwined nature of Phase 4, all things currently point to MI-13.

Eternal is available to watch on Disney + while Secret invasion must land by the end of 2022.
