Job Summary:

Goals and Worker Activities

A. 40% Cleaning of Windows and Other Glass Fixtures up to as high as 160 Feet
1. Wash windows, window sills, skylights, glass block, glazed tile walls, glass doors, transoms, display cabinets and glass shelves.
2. Remove, disassemble, wash, reassemble, and replace overhead lights and light fixtures
3. Remove, wash and hang storm windows and screens.
4. Remove, clean, and replace a variety of windows, screens and storms.
5. Remove and reinstall window air conditioning units in order to clean windows.

B. 20% Assistance to Trade Workers
1. Work with tradesmen to facilitate maintenance and remodeling projects as a participating member of CURB (Concentrated Upgrade and Repair of Buildings) teams. Work includes direct support for the following:

  • Removal and replacement of ceiling tiles.
  • Removal of carpeting and/or flooring.
  • Remove windows for repair.

2. Responsible for the material condition of Physical Plant scaffolding, swing staging, and “Genie” lifts. Inspect and repair or replace any defective components. Deliver and recover scaffolding from work sites. Perform safety inspections and conduct an inventory of scaffold components prior to and following use.
3. Perform work essential to the operation of the Electric Shop:

  • Assist electricians in recycling and disposal of light fixtures, wiring, and drive control units.
  • Deliver necessary electrical equipment and supplies to various job sites.
  • Responsible for the removal and disposal of outdated material like ballasts, lights, metal components which are then sorted and recycled.
  • Assemble scaffolding and deliver lifts to work sites.
  • Responsible for assisting with work requested by electricians.
  • Determine what needs to be done on a daily basis.
  • Organize work orders by priority.

4. Perform inspections on personal safety equipment and reject all items that do not meet safety standards.
5. Remove obstructions in preparation for construction, remodeling and/or repair.

C. 15% Maintenance and Repair
1. Inspect and repair flags, flagpoles and other materials used for campus ceremonies and celebrations (i.e., Homecoming and Alumni Weekend events).
2. Inspect and repair material used in setups for special events (staging, tables, and chairs).

D. 15% Miscellaneous Assigned Duties
1. Move furniture and equipment for various departments and Physical Plant shops. Move sensitive and fragile equipment such as art work and electrical equipment.
2. Assist with snow removal using shovels, snow throwers, mechanized brushes and plows.
3. Setup and take down large, banquet size tents.
4. Disassemble, assemble and move modular work stations and library metal shelving.
5. Evaluate and prepare to utilize new equipment, methods, and materials when prudent to do so.
6. Report workplace accidents in a timely manner.
7. Attend safety meetings and training sessions when required.
8. Serve as a substitute truck driver.
9. Perform other duties as assigned.

E. 10% Setups and Tear-downs
1. Install and remove banners for Homecoming, Alumni Weekend, and other campus-wide events.
2. Erect and tear down various stage configurations, including ramps, railings, and frames for backdrops. Install carpeting, podiums and seating.
3. Configure the Kohl Center for commencement ceremonies, concerts and banquets.
4. Setup scaffolds and/or swing stage units and Bosun’s chair.
5. Setup and operate electrical lifts.
6. Haul and setup chairs, tables and staging for special events (i.e., commencements, banquets, Homecoming, etc.).

Knowledge and skills

1. Knowledge of the safe use and weight restrictions of various ladders.
2. Knowledge of light fixture disassembly and proper disposal of bulbs and ballast.
3. Knowledge of moveable stage setup and disassembly.
4. Knowledge of the proper solutions used for various types of window washing and other glass cleaning work; ability to mix these solutions in correct proportions.
5. Knowledge of occupational safety hazards and correct and safe techniques used in cleaning windows and transoms.
6. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in cleaning windows.
7. Knowledge of safe lifting methods and general safety precautions for handling equipment and materials.
8. Knowledge of proper methods of loading vehicles to provide even distribution of weight and security of cargo.
9. Knowledge of Physical Plant, OSHA, and DWD (Department of Workforce Development) health and safety policies.
10. Knowledge of all safety procedures, and skill in operating the following equipment: Genie Lift, Fork Lift, Swing Stage (suspended staging), DENKA Lift, Scaffolding (fixed and rolling), Bosun Chair, and Fork Lift (must be certified).
11. Skill in the proper use of a variety of hand tools, power tools, and personal safety equipment.
12. Skill in the safe operation of the following moving equipment: Dollies, Jacks, Carts, lifts.
13. Skill in operating the following vehicles: Vans, Pickups, Panel trucks, Stake bodies. Skill in safe operation of hydraulic tailgate (“Tommy”) lifts.
14. Ability to read, understand and follow simple event setup drawings.
15. Ability to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions while working independently.
16. Ability to read English language sufficiently to understand work orders, operating manuals, regulations and hazardous substance warnings.
17. Ability and visual acuity to read product labels, manuals, and equipment instruments, and to judge distances and operate equipment around other vehicles, buildings, co-workers, and pedestrians on campus.
18. Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively.
19. Ability to work from heights as high as 160 feet. Ability to climb and work in high places using ladders, scaffolding, safety belts, boom trucks, or other special equipment.
20. Ability to lift 80 pounds; push, pull, reach, stoop, bend, twist, climb ladders, and perform required strenuous tasks for an entire shift. Sufficient physical strength and ability to lift, move and setup large ladders and other equipment.
21. Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions such as severe cold, extreme heat, rain, snow, and ice.
22. Ability to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.
23. Ability to work hours in excess of the normal work shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
24. Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance.
