A 24-year-old man was remanded in custody Monday night after an attack on a WWE wrestler, a spokesman for the New York Police Department told ESPN.
The man, who was present at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the WWE Raw TV show, ran to WWE star Seth Rollins and tackled him during the live broadcast. The attacker and Rollins fought on the ground for a moment until security and WWE officials, including judges, broke up the clash.
The altercation could initially be seen live on TV, but WWE cameras quickly cut away as it was clear that the attack was not part of the script. Many spectators captured the incident with their phone cameras and posted it on social media.
Charges against the man are pending and his name will be released when the charges are official, the police spokesman said.
“WWE takes the safety of its artists very seriously,” WWE wrote to ESPN in a statement. “The person who attacked Seth Rollins has been handed over to the NYPD and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Rollins, one of WWE’s biggest stars and a former WWE champion, walked back towards the entrance after a Raw segment with wrestler Finn Balor. When he reached the top of the ramp, the striker came running at full speed and tackled Rollins, whose real name is Colby Lopez, roughly to the ground. Rollins, who was trying to maintain the character, was able to go backwards on his own as the officials contained the attacker.
