First look: Mason Raw is a UK-made, versatile steel hardtail

You may not have heard of Mason before. They are a small British brand with a range of road, gravel and adventure bikes, all with curly handlebars. But now they have brought their first flat-bar mountain bike, Mason Raw.

It’s a hardtail with a steel frame, made in the UK and designed to run on trails, travel, bike … whatever you want, really. It has no less than fifteen bosses for mounting bottles, bags and other accessories, but it also has a 120mm fork and geometry that would not be out of place on an aggressive trail hardtail. The specification is also very customizable, so it seems that there are many ways you can use this bike.

Mason Raw details
• Intended use: “Trail & Travel”
• Made in the UK with Dedacciai / Reynolds steel pipes
• Fork travel: 120 mm
• Wheels: 29 “
Alleged frame weight: 2.4 – 2.67 kg
• 75.1 ° seat angle, 66 ° head angle (lowered)
Sizes: S, M, L, XL
• Price: £ 1,695 (frame only) to £ 4195 (XT Launch build)

The frame has a traditional non-sloping top tube, designed to provide more space for frame bags that can be stored inside the spacious front triangle. The tubes are spiced with studs for bolting various parts of the set, including bag holder brackets and studs under the down tube and on top of the top tube. You can even specify male (external) pads on the seat tube to allow you to run a long drop post without regular bottle holder bolts that limit the insertion depth. The point is, you can load it with enough sets for one relatively comfortable multi-day trip. Alternatively, you can just sling a water bottle on it and take a hot lap.

Speaking of which, Raw’s geometry looks far more fun than your typical bike-packing hardtail. There is a 66-degree head angle (measured by deflection) and an effective seat angle of 75.1 to 75.4 degrees (depending on size). The range goes from 426 mm (S) to 491 mm (XL), and the bike is specified with 35 or 45 mm stems, which should help keep the handling relatively safe on steep and technical terrain. Of course, there are looser hardtails these days, but Mason wouldn’t have too much wheel flop once the bike is unloaded.

The frame is made of a combination of Reynolds and Dedacciai Zero and Zero UNO tubes, all of which are made in Europe. The tubes are then further shaped and welded together Five land bikes which is based near Edinburgh, Scotland, and also works with Cotic and Swarf.
