Performs field qualitative analyses of unknown substances. Consolidates known compatible hazardous wastes and maintains consolidation control sheets for drum contents and identification.Essential

Responds to incidents involving the release of hazardous materials or petroleum products on the UAF campus and affiliated sites. Assists with identifying containment and clean up options, performs clean up procedures, and documents closure of the incident. Responsible for notification to state authorities as needed.Essential

Transports chemicals and other hazardous materials, including liquid nitrogen, radioactive materials, and biological materials, between locations on the UAF campus. Assists other UAF departments with preparing shipments of hazardous materials (i.e., chemicals, lithium batteries, biological materials) to field sites and other locations.Essential

Works closely with Hazardous Materials Coordinator and others in EHSRM on all hazardous management-related activities. Other duties as assigned.Essential

Coordinates and performs removal of hazardous wastes from campus laboratories and other points of generation. Ensures all hazardous waste accumulation containers and areas are inspected and maintains log of inspections. Ensures that deficiencies are remedied.Essential

Coordinates quarterly disposal of hazardous wastes generated on campus and at other UAF sites. Ensures that all materials for disposal are properly identified, segregated, and packaged for shipment. Ensures that all necessary reporting is completed on time.Essential

Develops and maintains databases for tracking hazardous wastes. Ensures that the SDS database is kept up to date.Essential

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Expert knowledge of hazardous waste and environmental regulations (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (29 CFR 1910.120), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (40 CFR 239-282), and Hazardous Materials Transportation (49 CFR 171-180 and IATA/ICAO regulations).

Knowledge of chemicals and materials used on campus, including research and teaching labs. Experience with identifying and characterizing unknown hazardous materials using HAZCAT techniques.

Ability to wear an SCBA and other spill response personal protection equipment.

Extensive experience with computer software including spreadsheets and databases. Experience with online regulatory reporting systems.

Ability to work in a harsh and stressful environment at times, with temperature extremes.

Ability to lift and move heavy items such as 55 gallon drums.

Availability to be on-call 24/7 to respond to hazardous materials spills or similar issues.

Must have a clean driving record and be able to travel to off-campus locations around the state of Alaska. Occasional travel out of state for training opportunities may also be necessary.


Minimum of 4 years’ experience in the field of hazardous waste management, hazardous materials, emergency response, and hazardous materials transportation.


Bachelor’s degree in hazardous materials, chemistry, engineering, or another relevant field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
