Helps nonprofits on Giving Tuesday

(KRON) – As a teenager, Christian Aguirre supported himself at the Rainbow Community Center in Concord, now he helps others as HIV Outreach Manager.

Aguirre says without this non-profit organization, “I probably would not be here right now.”

The center has provided resources to the LGBTQ community since 1995.

On Tuesday, the non-profit reaches more than 1,000 people each year across Contra Costa County.

They provide access to housing, finance, clothing, toys during the holidays and mental health services.

So Giving Tuesday is a big deal for them, along with other non-profit organizations like Homies Empowerment in East Oakland that rely on donations from the community to keep their good work going.

“Black Friday is about shopping, it’s about supporting consumerism. But Giving Tuesday is about taking care of each other, that we’re community oriented, that we take care of our neighbors. It’s a beautiful idea, and it’s the first time we’re ever “To hear from neighbors who have been affected by our work and who now want to give back,” said Dr. Cesar Cruz, founder of Homies Empowerment.

The volunteers at Homies Empowerment were once troubled youths who themselves participated in the program, turned away from gang life and now give back.

Since the pandemic, their work has shifted to distributing food, clothing, supplies and $ 1,000 to the needy.

The FREEdom store serves an average of 400 individuals and families per week.

In North Bay, Napa Wildlife Rescue relies solely on volunteers, grants and donations to help orphaned or injured animals.

“Wildlife is in crisis. It has been in crisis all over the world for some time. We have lost about 60% of wildlife since 1970. and organizations like the napa wildlife are the only ones really working to push it back,” he said. President John Cominsky.

Of course, there are many more charities out there that do important work and that could also use your help.

Non-commercial donations are deductible. Money or time can go a long way.
