Police have found an ‘amazing’ catch of uncovered designer goods and illegal objects in pre-Christmas raids on Oxford Street.

More than 17,500 items were confiscated in the multi-agency Operation Jade, where four souvenir and candy stores were searched on Thursday night in the popular central London Riddle.

Trade standards seized 11,000 items, including unsafe ones toy, counterfeit clothing and nicotine products incorrectly labeled and high in nicotine.

Police confiscated two bags of food that had more than the legal legal limit for THC – the main psychoactive substance in cannabis.

Meanwhile, other employees seized 4,000 items sold by an unregistered food business manager.

About 2,500 souvenirs were taken from unregistered businesses and illegal street vendors.

Health and safety officers issued three messages for unsafe electrical goods and poor safety standards in premises.

Westminster City Council Cabinet member for community and regeneration Heather Acton said: ‘Oxford Street is the country’s main street, our customers should be able to trust that the products they buy in the city are as described’ on the can ‘.

‘The quantity and diversity of goods seized by our officers is astounding. Many of these items are unsafe and certainly unhealthy.

“From cheap imitations of fashionable products to mislabeled tobacco and even psychoactive substances, it is crucial that we protect customers and get these products off the shelves.

“This Christmas is make or break for many high street shops, and checking retailers will support legitimate businesses and protect the West End’s reputation as a leading destination for shoppers.”
