Classification Benefits

Summary Description

Under general supervision from the appropriate program director or administrator, performs a variety of responsible instructional assistance and support functions within the Learning Assistance Program (LAP); assesses, evaluates and assists students with instructional guidance in a variety of academic subjects; places students with proper instructional tutors; provides training and mentoring for student and volunteer tutors; provides tutoring directly to students in one’s area of expertise.

Knowledge of

Principles, practices and application of subject matter to which assigned. 
Principles, methods and procedures of instructing and providing learning opportunities to students. 
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. 
Modern office and laboratory equipment used in an educational setting. 
Methods and procedures used in scheduling and record keeping. 
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. 
Basic principles of supervision and training.

Ability to

Assess student needs and provide appropriate instructional assistance and support functions within a variety of areas. 
Monitor student progress, identify problem areas and recommend effective course of action. 
Prepare and maintain accurate records and files. 
Supervise and train student and volunteer assistants. 
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education/Training

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a specific educational field including foreign language, science, math, English, business or a related field.

Experience

One year of experience instructing, tutoring or assisting in the instruction of tutoring of adults.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting. Duties are typically performed at a desk or computer terminal; subject to noise from office equipment operation; frequent interruptions and contact in person and on the telephone with students, academic and classified staff and others. At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort.

Physical Demands

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interview student learners, evaluate needs and provide general instruction and assistance to students on a variety of course related matters; review student work in progress and assist in resolving learning problems; assign appropriate tutor as necessary.

Provide continuous training and mentoring for student and volunteer tutors; schedule tutor work hours to maximize coverage during center operations.

Evaluate operations and activities of the Learning Assistance Program; recommend improvements and modifications.

Answer questions and provide information to students and the public regarding LAP services and operations; advise students of available programs; conduct classroom presentations regarding the LAP as requested by faculty.

Recruit qualified tutors by contacting faculty for recommendations or encouraging high level LAP student learners to become tutors.

Participate in tutor training classes; enhance tutor’s communication skills and familiarize them with goals and objectives of the LAP; augment cross cultural communication skills.

Prepare and/or update study guides, instructional materials and procedure manuals for use by LAP tutors and students.

Prepare various reports and memos for faculty, staff and tutors regarding LAP operations and activities.
