Talking to Fandango, producer Amy Pascal gave a vague update about the long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and tells fans that they will “soon” get a look at the animated film. By discussing the overall presence of the multiverse and parallel realities in mainstream media over the past few years, Pascal also emphasized how Spider verse can be connected to other Sony superhero movies and Marvel Cinematic Universe.
On the question of the successor to the 2018s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Pascal only said that “It’s going to be great.” While Pascal also promises that Sony will “have something to show for it very soon,” we can pretty much say that the lid remains closed on the project until further notice. That should remain true at least until Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters on December 17 and brings another layer of the Multiverse into the MCU.
Speaking of the multiverse, Pascal also had some interesting comments on how Sony and Marvel intend to deal with parallel realities, especially since Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced the concept to the public in 2018. According to Pascal, Spider-Verse reality will remain separate from both MCU and the other Sony live-action superhero movies. However, the manufacturer does not discard intersections between all three universes in future projects.
As Pascal puts it:
“Well, there’s the Marvel Universe, which is one container, and then there is Spider verse movies that are different and then there is the second universe where the Sony characters are in. We all have a lot of respect for each other and work together and make sure we are only additive. “
Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Lego movie), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the hearts of both critics and the public with a unique art style that mimics comics and a deeply emotional story with many spider men (and woman … and pigs).
The sequel was confirmed by Sony before the first movie was even released, but the studio did not reveal any plot details. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will be directed by a trio of instructors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings) writes the script together with Lord and Miller.
So far, Sony has only released a few cryptic images for Spider verse sequel and we are all impatient to see how the sequel will explore different versions of the crawler. Considering Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the sequel is set to be released on October 7, 2022, we can actually expect some concrete news soon as Sony moves away from No way home and start marketing their next Spider-Man project.
