Prior to his return as Batman in Lightning next year, Michael Keaton celebrates its milestone 70th birthday with fans around the world. Over the past few decades, Keaton has appeared in a number of major roles, though he is particularly loved for his run as Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s Batman and its successor Batman returns. Lightning brings him back to the role on the big screen for the third time in 2022.
Of course, Batman fans are ecstatic about Keaton’s return to the role. Although various actors have come in to act as the Dark Knight in recent years, many people have long called for Keaton to return in a new film as an older Bruce. Some fans imagined that he would perform in a live-action adaptation of Batman Beyond, which would make him act as a mentor to a teenager who wore the Batman cloak.
Batman Beyond: Movies was not intended, at least not at this time, but Keaton’s return was still in the cards. Thanks to a multiverse story at the heart of The Flash, Keaton will be able to return as the same Batman he played in the Tim Burton movies, even though Ben Affleck acts as DCEU’s Batman. Both incarnations of the character will be in the same film, though word is that it will be Affleck’s final performance in the role. There are also rumors that Keaton will continue to appear as Batman in other DC movies like DCEU’s version of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Meanwhile, Keaton will also be seen in the upcoming Marvel movie Morbius. He will repeat his Spider-Man: Homecoming role as Grib, although this is for a separate continuity outside the MCU. If you get confused by following all these multiverse variation stories and characters, you are not alone. Keaton told THR last month how it took a lot to explain with people from Marvel for him to understand how it would all work.
“I nod as if I know what the hell they’re talking about. I say ‘Uh-huh.’ And I think, ‘You might as well explain to me quantum physics right now,’ Keaton remembers. “The only thing I know is that I just know my guy. And I know the basics. “Then finally they looked at me and they just started laughing. They said, ‘You do not know what we’re talking about, do you?’ I said, ‘No, I do not, have no idea what you’re talking about.’ “
When he was first caught up with the multiverse, Keaton was excited to return as Bruce Wayne for Lightning after reading Christina Hodson’s manuscript. The actor said, “Honestly, in the back of my mind, I always thought, ‘I bet I could go back and nail that mom.’ ‘And then I thought,’ Well, now that they’re asking me, let me see if I can handle it. ‘ “
We will all see how Keaton’s return as Batman goes down with Lightning will be released on November 4, 2022. Before then, he’s back as Grib in Morbius January 28, 2022. For now, fans are celebrating the Hollywood legend’s 70th birthday, and you can see what Batman fans tell about the apartment on Twitter.
