When Keanu Reeves first shot back to the action genre back in 2014 with John Wick, no one knew it would be a series, but we knew we wanted more immediately. Fast forward seven years and Reeves’ ultra-assassin leads a full-on franchise with three films deep, one that effectively builds on a mythology surrounding an underground league of killers with their own rules, customs and guidelines. Just a few days after the third installment, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, hit theaters, Lionsgate announced that a fourth film was already on the horizon, with Reeves back in the title role, ace-stuntman-transformed filmmaker Chad Stahelski returns to direct, and Mike Finch (Predators) takes over manuscript assignments. Although the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the release date a year back, we are now fast approaching the debut of John Wick: Chapter 4 and the hype, as they say, is genuine.
Below you will find everything you need to know about John Wick: Chapter 4, from the release date, to where it is currently recorded, to all the new cast and more.
When is ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ release date?
John Wick: Chapter 4 was originally scheduled to hit theaters on May 21, 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic — as well as Reeves’ planning conflicts with The Matrix: Resurrections—The premiere date was pushed back one year to May 27, 2022. Right now, that’s where we are.
Who’s in the role of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’?
In addition to Reeves returning as a titular hitman, Stahalesky also confirmed recently Ian McShane would return for his fourth John Wick film. “I could not be happier than to welcome Ian McShane back John Wick: Chapter 4, ” said the director in a statement at the time. “He’s not only an amazing actor, but he’s an indispensable collaborator who has helped define John Wick’s world.”
Other familiar faces confirmed for the fourth post are Lance Reddick and Laurence Fishburne. John Wick: Chapter 4 has also quickly built up an absolutely stacked cast of new cast members, including a trio of documented action badasses in Donnie Yen (Ip man), Scott Adkins (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear), and Mark Zaror (Machete kills) along with the terrifying evil clown of horror Bill Skarsgård (That), stage steals Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Kombat), Wynonna Earp favorite Shamier Anderson, Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama in his film debut and the damned Kurgan himself, Clancy Brown.
In a recent chat with Collider, Yen especially stressed how amazing a time he has had on the set with John Wick: Chapter 4:
“I have to take this opportunity [to show] my greatest appreciation of both Chad and Keanu. They are lovely men. They are just a gentleman, they have big hearts. Keanu has a wonderful soul. Chad also a very good man. Very knowledgeable. People think he’s just an ingenious action guy, he’s not. He understands film. He is a film librarian. He knows what’s going on. I just feel better working with them than any of my previous Hollywood movies …[Reeves] is just amazing. He’s more than I expected. The guy does everything himself. He put in the hours, he got the work started. He can do that. He’s no joke. ”
Skarsgard also noted how he came to the franchise as a fan of the action genre and eventually joined the film after turning it off with Stahelski:
“I think the movies are very entertaining. I’ve always been a fan of that kind of over-the-top, exploitative action movie … Chad [Stahelski] reached out to me and I met him a few times and I really liked him. It was a really fun role. I will not go into details [about] what it is, but it was a fun role and a fun world. I like the movies. I find them entertaining and it’s something I have not really done before. It’s always something that inspires me, no matter what it is. It’s like, ‘Okay, this is a project or a genre or something I did not do, so let’s try it and let’s have fun within those genre limitations.’ So I’m really looking forward to it. ”
When and where will ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ be filmed?
Back in June 2021, a text sent to subscribers was confirmed John Wick: Chapter 4 had started rolling cameras. “It has begun. Consider this a professional courtesy. John Wick: Chapter 4 is now in production, “the text read. Shamier Anderson confirmed the start of production later that day with a picture from the set.
Collider learned solely that production continued John Wick: Chapter 4 would largely take the action out of New York City, with filming taking place primarily in Berlin and Paris before further photography takes place in Japan and New York. In addition, we learned that Lionsgate’s original plan to shoot John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 back-to-back was put on hold due to the pandemic and only John Wick 4 will be in the can by the end of the summer.
Who are the confirmed characters in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’?
Keanu Reeves, of course, plays the title role as John Wick, an assassin who wears hell’s suits and knows about 10,000 ways to make you dead. McShane repeats the role of Winston, owner of the New York Continental Hotel, whom we last saw betray John Wick with a bullet to the chest. Stahelski noted that he still believes Winston’s intentions are for interpretation. “He meant to shoot him,” the director told THR. “Did he mean to kill him? It’s open to interpretation, you can take it in two ways, and that’s how we get some of the unanswered questions in John Wick 4.”
Lance Reddick will resume the role of Charon, Continental’s Steel Concerts, while Fishburne will once again play the underground assassin leader, The Bowery King. The exact details of any new characters have so far been rather scarce. In a talk with Collider, Skarsgard said his role did not require combat training, but was “something else.” Shamier Anderson, on the other hand, has posted a lot behind the scenes looks at his intensive weapons training and suggests that no matter who his character is, he will be with Wick. Marko Zaror, a stuntman and martial arts artist as well as actor, will reportedly be one of John Wick’s “biggest opponents” in the film.
What is the ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ plot?
Although there is no official plot overview yet John Wick: Chapter 4, there is plenty of information out there about what to expect. The film will shoot after the explosive end to John Wick 3, who saw John completely separated from the assassin organization known as The High Table. The consortium’s management believes John is dead – thanks to Winston who shot him from the roof of a building – but he was actually injured and in the care of The Bowery King. In a conversation with Collider, Fishburne revealed that the upcoming film, like all posts before it, will strive to dig even deeper into the mythology and lore environment of this world.
“I read the script. It’s really, really cool. As much as it’s the same world as the other three movies, it’s just deeper. It’s much deeper in terms of the assassin’s code and the relationship he has with a character in especially … is really the heart and soul of it. ”
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Stahelski was pretty solid that no matter where John Wick: Chapter 4 going, it will not have a happy ending.
“John may survive all that shit, but in the end there is no happy ending. He has nowhere to go. Honestly, I’m challenging you right now, here’s a question for you: How the hell do you want me to finish it? Do you think he’s going to ride out in that damn sunset? He’s killed 300 fucking people and he just wants to [walk away], is everything OK? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you’re this fuck, if this guy really exists[ed], how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s been fucked the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time. ”
