Jordan Klepper had not attended a Trump rally since he inadvertently was in the middle of a Capitol riot on January 6, “a day no one will ever forget unless you are a Republican member of Congress,” he said. Daily show contributor joked in his latest post. But last week, Klepper bravely returned to the stage and trolled the crowd at the former president big event in Iowa for most embarrassing devotees he could find.
What he discovered more than anything else were banners, flags and deceived supporters who all proclaimed that “Trump won” as high as they could. “And even though Trump won, they hope he runs again,” Klepper explained. “Are we ready for this? I mean, the last guy hasn ‘t even admitted yet. ”
He tracked down a couple who warned former Vice President Mike Pence would not be welcome in the crowd. “Do you think Mike Pence will show up here today, or will he not hang out?” Asked Klepper, the double meaning seemed to go over their heads.
“I think he would be afraid to show up here today,” the woman replied. When he asked why, she shot back: “Because he was a coward and he did not do the right thing, therefore!” She refused, as Klepper suggested he might want to stay away because “these people were trying to kill him.” The man next to her, who was wearing a t-shirt that showed former President Donald Trump gave two middle fingers over the words “One for Biden, One for Harris,” saw no irony in his complaints that the current administration “gave the middle finger” to the whole country.
And then there were the two men holding a “Trump 2024: Take America Back” banner that was particularly concerned about the “border crisis.” Klepper asked them, “And you’re from Iowa? So you’m worried about people coming in from Minnesota? ”
Another man calmly explained that he believes Trump still secretly runs the military, but blanched when Klepper suggested he should then take the blame for the mess in Afghanistan. None of them seemed to believe that their MAGA brothers were responsible for January 6, instead claiming “antifa”, “corrupt FBI” and “deep state” were actually behind the attack.
Two other women in matching MAGA hats and American flag overalls similarly pushed back on the notion that Trump supporters are a “cult,” while saying, “I feel like whatever he spits out of his mouth. , I just love it. ”
“It does not matter what he says?” Klepper asked them. “But isn’t that a cult?”
“I do not think so,” replied one with a straight face.
