Marvel Studios has no doubt played on a lot of uncertainties and came out on top despite the odds. They have carried lesser known properties such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant man to great ticket heights, but Marvel boss Kevin Feige says their biggest risk came at the very beginning, and that was the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
Feige spoke recently CinemaBlend about the risks MCU has taken, and Feige says casting Robert Downey Jr. in the 2008s Iron Man was their greatest risk. It may seem strange to say now that Robert Downey Jr. without a doubt one of the biggest movie stars working today, but the actor came across a well-known battle with drugs and he had a lot to prove to show that he was ready to take something he likes Iron Man on. Here’s what Feige had to say:
“I was so lucky to be there early Spider Man movies and X men movies, but we wanted to make an Iron Man movie. And I still think the biggest risk – which seems outrageous to say now – was the casting of Robert Downey Jr. That was both the biggest risk and the most important one at the founding of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without Robert, we would not be sitting here today. I really believe that. ”
On top of Downey Jr.’s past, there was also the question that the actor had not really made a film like Iron Man before. At that point in his career, it would probably be best to call him a character actor, as he did not really headline a large tent pole release of that scale. No one doubted his acting chops, but Feige credits Jon Favreau for having the foresight to fight for him to get the part:
“He was a fantastic actor. Everyone knew he was a great actor, but he had not been an action star. He was not necessarily a tent star. And we quickly realized the risk I have said this before was not to cast him. And Jon Favreau really had that vision for that movie and for Robert in that role. That decision and the success of that decision I think gave us the opportunity for further risks and further choices. ”
It’s really hard to imagine others playing Tony Stark. Robery Downey Jr. embodied this role and made it determined to be its own. I really think the success they found in casting him honestly led to Marvel making several casting choices that may have been risky on paper, but certainly succeeded in the end.
Do you think it was risky to throw Robery Downey Jr. out? Iron Man?
