Kurt Sutter TV Western in the Works on Netflix

There will be no downtime on Netflix for Sons of Anarchy and Mayans, MC creates Kurt Sutter. The three-time Emmy nominee and producer has reached an agreement with the streamer to create a new series, The abandoned, set to be a western and follow the same rough nature as Sutter’s earlier work, but now in the old west.

This announcement comes not too long after the streaming giant hired Sutter to get its feature film debut under their banner. Netflix was looking for the showrunner after his abrupt exit from FX in 2019, which had been his home for nearly two decades. By the time he left, Sutter was loud about what was happening, without the sugar coating reasons he revealed in a letter shared by Deadline:

“I felt the creative scrutiny of Disney from day one. Notes on scripts and clips have been harsh. Requires a level of stupefying history and insane PC limitations that I have never experienced before. I really feared for the creative future of storytelling. So I pushed back. Hard. “

Sutter’s new project, The Abandons, is still in early development, and may only gain traction when he finishes his film with the title This Beast. He spoke with Deadline regarding The Abandons, and revealed what attracted him to the project, as well as his influence:

“I have always been fascinated by the origins of La Cosa Nostra, how these Sicilian peasant families were more than marginalized by the land barons and aristocrats. These families banded together to defend themselves against these violent land barons, and from what took them cases in their own hands, La Cosa Nostra was born and became the authority and the law and the order of the country. There are other influences.During the pandemic I saw rebroadcasts of Bonanza, and first of all, it keeps it complete. I remember seeing it as a kid, but I just remember there’s an episode where someone gets killed and Hoss just wants revenge, and I mean kind of dark, damn revenge. In the end, it’s a Sunday TV ending, but I just realized that Cartwrights was a bullet away from being outlaws. […] That was the origin of this, with the working title The Abandons. “

The hiring of Sutter as producer and showrunner is another example of Netflix’s strategy to bring powerful industry names such as Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy to create top-tier content in the coming years. Rhimes has brought on Bridgerton, which has since become one of the streamer’s biggest hits, and Inventor Anna, due to premiere in February 2022. Six-time Emmy winner Murphy has brought several shows such as. Politicians, Hollywood, Garbage, and movies like Prom. With Sutter added to this board, we can only expect new and impressive content from showrunners that we know and love to fall on the platform in the future.

Netflix has not yet revealed a release date and other relevant information about The Abandons.
