Police are urging victims of the November 1 incident to report
Vancouver police have arrested a man they believe was caught on video when he threatened another person with a large stick on Burrard Street earlier this month.
In a prepared statement, a spokesman for the Vancouver Police Department said Const. Tania Visintin said the incident took place at. 21.30 on November 1 and was recorded by someone from the other side of the road and that the video was posted on social media and shared widely.
“The video shows a man walking around near Burrard and Drake streets, holding a stick and hitting pedestrians and vehicles,” Visintin said.
‘At one point in the video, the man aims the cane and chases a pedestrian at full speed. Moments later, he points the stick at a person with his back to him and then gets on a bus. “
Police are now asking the victim to report.
“This frightening incident was captured on tape, but the victim did not report the meeting to Vancouver police,” Visintin said.
“We would like to hear from this person or anyone else who has information so we can better understand what happened. This behavior was very worrying and it endangered public safety.”
Visintin said two police officers later identified the suspect after responding to reports of a disturbance in a social housing complex near the streets of Cambie and Dunsmuir.
“As officers approached him, the man claimed to have a gun and tried to flee, but officers arrested him before he could run away,” she said.
The man, a 26-year-old resident of the West End, was already wanted throughout BC for another offense and was jailed.
