A 24-year-old Gatineau man was arrested for restrained driving after a pair of MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police officers noticed the drive-thru line was not moving as they waited for a night meal at McDonald’s.

The manager of the Gatineau fast food restaurant came out to check on the driver, who appeared to be sleeping at the wheel, in the incident just before 11pm on November 14, the force said in a media release.

As one of the officers approached the vehicle, the driver left without his food, police said, adding that officers followed as he slowly walked to a home about two miles away.

He stopped at a red light, but not for the cruiser behind him with lights and sirens activated, police said.

When the driver stopped, police quickly realized he was “in an advanced state of intoxication” and made an arrest, police said. In an exhalation test, the man must have had an alcohol per mille in his blood almost tripled the legal limit.

The man, who police said was a repeat offender, had his vehicle seized for 30 days and his driver’s license revoked for 90 days.

As for the still hungry officers, a colleague picked up the food they had ordered and paid for, police said.
