Man shot and killed in Oakland after confronting suspect of car theft

A man was shot and killed in Oakland Sunday afternoon after following and confronting a person he suspected had broken into nearby cars, authorities said.

The shooting took place just after 3.30pm in the 600 block on Grand Avenue, near Eastshore Park. According to police, the victim had witnessed a man break into cars in the 3300 block on Grand Avenue and then follow the suspect south by car. He approached the suspect and was shot. The suspect then fled the scene.

The fatal shooting is the 127th death being investigated by Oakland police. In addition, the California Highway Patrol has investigated five homicides so far on Oakland freeways. The highest number of homicides investigated by Oakland police is 131 in 2012.
