Market accepts IOUs from customers as outages knock out the payment system

CAMPO, California – A small mountain community east of the Golden Acorn Casino along Interstate 8 was without power on Thanksgiving Day, and they were not the only ones.

About 43,000 SDG & E customers were warned by the power supply of potential outages triggered by blowing Santa Ana winds and dangerous fire in the weather forecast. Thousands were without power from early Thursday morning and the impact could be felt, including at the Live Oak Springs Market on the Boulevard.

The market ran on a small generator and supplied only a limited number of goods.

“I just prioritize ice machines,” said owner Marioes Matthe. “Things that can melt or destroy.”

On top of the race to save groceries, Matthe could not run card payments or pump gas for her customers. The small grocery store began taking IOUs from those who were unable to pay with cash.

He says he knows the majority of customers living in the community will pay him back, as many of them rely on EBT cards for payment.

“I called AT&T and they said they are closed on holidays,” he said, “so I could not get any technical support to help me either.”

Shonna Sawders lives on Boulevard, down the road from Live Oak Springs, and says SDG&E gave her a 24-hour notice before the power went out.

“When the power goes out, you lose your water,” Sawders said. “You’re losing your stove. You’re losing your heat source.”

Sawders says the majority of locals get their water from a well that uses an electric pump that she is unable to use. While understanding the reason for the outages, Sawders said she would like SDG&E to provide affected community generators or financial assistance to purchase one.

“I spent most of the day washing carpets,” she said. “Make sure the kids have double blankets, make sure we have gallons of jugs of water to flush the toilet out, wash our hands and wash up.”

The company interruption card is available here.
