According to the statement, the man was part of a film crew exploring the terrain when the snowboarder, who was not wearing a helmet, fell and hit his head against a snow-covered rock.
Despite attempts to revive the Slovenian man by his team and staff at the resort, the victim died on the spot, the statement concluded.
Two of Grilc’s sponsors – Burton Snowboards and GoPro – confirmed the snowboarder’s death via Twitter on Wednesday.
“Our heart goes out to his fiancée Nina and their children, family and friends, who all shared his love and passion for snowboarding.”
“He was a legend and will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
Grilc leaves behind his fiancée and two children.
Born in Ljubljana, Grilc became a prominent name in the freestyle snowboarding scene during his long career.
During an 11-year competitive career, Grilc would record nine podium finishes – victories come via the Big Air events at the European Cup in Croatia in 2004 and the World Cup in London in 2010.
His last competitive appearance came at the World Championships in Copper Mountain, Colorado in 2013, and Grilc subsequently moved into a variety of film projects related to snowboarding.
“Snowboarding is so simple, it’s basically just tearing down the mountain on a piece of wood,” Grilc says toward the end of the video.
“Just the desire you get from riding, from driving a sick line, and the happiness I saw out here was unreal. I’m sure this team of people will have stories to tell in the years to come.”
