Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen wasted no time in letting people know exactly what he meant as the end of his prison sentence approached, calling former White House strategist Steve Bannon a “racist” who considers the former president as an “idiot” in a recent podcast episode.
“Steve is really not who you think he is. People will … say he seems like a sweet, quiet guy. He is not,” Cohen told CNN commentators Maria Cardona and Alice Stewart on en “Hot Mics from left to rightEpisode released last Thursday, a few days before he completed his sentence on Monday.
“Actually,” Cohen said, “Steve Bannon is a bloody racist – no different [Trump’s former White House aide] Steve Miller … He’s a damn maniac in the nth degree. “
“His leader is Donald Trump,” Cohen said of Bannon, before adding that Bannon “thinks Donald is an idiot. That’s the truth.”
Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in 2018 after pleading guilty to charges of campaign financing, tax evasion and lying to Congress. He served about half of his time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said Monday that his release was “long overdue.”
Cohen also promised to continue collaborating with federal authorities in other investigations. He predicted in a CNN interview that others in Trump’s circle would be prosecuted for various crimes, naming Trump’s three oldest children.
