‘NCIS’ summary: Why McGee did not replace Gibbs as team leader

NCIS fans got their first taste of what a Gibbs-less show looks like this Monday. Along the way, they also received answers to some burning questions about the one-time team leader’s exit (as well as other, long-term workplace problems).

These questions included:

DID VANCE GIBBS JOB FOR (FORMS!) FBI AGENT ALDEN PARKER? | In short – when Parker himself let go by showing up in the big orange room, shortly after McGee returned from Alaska. Parker told McGee, Knight and Torres that he had turned down the offer, but moments later he agreed to miss a Simon & Garfunkel reunion concert that night to use his special set of skills to help Gibbs’ team crack their latest sag.

NCIS McGeeWAS THE MCGEE OFFER GIBBS JOB? IF IF, WHY WAS HE TURNED IT DOWN? | It was not 101 percent clear whether McGee rejected the concert when he offered it (though Vance) did tell Torres that he “did more than consider”McGee), or if he proactively took himself out of the race. But when Parker asked the NCIS vet (when he used a urinal!) Why he “did not make a game for Gibbs’ job,” McGee first mentioned the hours, reduced fieldwork and paperwork as reasons.

Later, when (an apparent interception) Torres pressed his colleague on the question, McGee opened up about how he was shot by Gibbs (at the peak of last season) controlling his decision. “I’m not Gibbs…. I can not imagine pulling that trigger ”even in the name of a good cause,” Tim said. And more to the point, “I do not want to be that guy ”if a situation required it. Moreover, the team leader role Gibbs showed over and over again can be all-consuming, and as one with a family, “it can ‘t be me,” McGee said. “It’s that simple.”

DO PARKS HAVE GIBBS BLESSING? | It certainly seems that way. When Torres first argued to Vance that Parker was mistaken for the job, the director shot back, “you have to tell Gibbs!” When Vance also confronted Parker that there was no Simon & Garfunkel reunion tour to be missed, the (former) G-man explained that he was “told” that if one fails disinterest while observing a “regular” “working day for the team, the risk of” scare is avoided[ing] the locals. Vance asked whose tip it was, but Parker said he would take the answer to his grave.

NCIS JimmyHOW IS MR. BALMER STOPS? | Related to Gibbs’ absence, but speaking to a larger issue, Jimmy at one point asked Ducky to stay as his partner (and not slip back into his “historian” role). When he was rejected, Jimmy opened up about how a series of losses – beginning with the death of his wife Breena, followed by Bishop and now Gibbs leaving the team – have left him shaken. “Change is the essence of life,” Ducky advised his mentee. Gibbs is not dead, but alive again, and perhaps for the first time since Shannon and Kelly died, Ducky assumed. And that they are missing their friend “is a small price to pay” for Gibbs’ newfound peace.

NCIS KasiaWHAT DOES KASIE TAKE ON (POTENTIALLY) NEW TEAM LEADER? | At the end of the episode, where the team was on the verge of catching their killer, Kasie Parker handed over a tell-tale lottery … but then refused to let it go. She then cued footage of LeMere taking her hostage at knife point a few paragraphs back, and shared that she had heard Parker planned to “negotiate” the situation if a shot from Gibbs had not called out and saved the day. In any identical future scenario, she says cooly, she would prefer a “shoot first, ask questions later” approach from her future boss.

What did you think of the first one? NCIS section of time after Gibbs?
