Tiger King 2 was surprisingly announced in September, and days later it got a release date of November 17th. The show is a follow-up to the landmark 2020 documentaries that captivated audiences around the world with its story of Joseph Schreibvogel, also known as Joe Exotic, the former owner of Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. A self-proclaimed expert in the world of big cats, Exotic was arrested in 2018 and jailed the following year for several reports of animal cruelty and for hiring two men to murder Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin.

“It’s been a well-deserved rotten year for Tiger King‘s villains, almost all of whom are now in jail, are out of action or facing criminal charges or lawsuits, “said PETA Foundation’s deputy director of law enforcement of captive animals, Brittany Peet, in a statement obtained by CBR when Tiger King 2 was announced. “PETA is pleased to have played a role in all the work to end their appalling abuse and neglect of magnificent wildlife and trusts that the second season will do more to highlight those who exploit them.”

Tiger King quickly spawned numerous follow-ups and spinoffs, including Kate McKinnon starring Joe Exotic from Peacock and the now defunct Nicolas Cage star Tiger King show from Amazon Prime Video. A TMZ special titled Tiger King: What really went down? and an Investigation Discovery limited series called Joe Exotic: Tigre, Lies and Cover-Up was also released.
