11:57 PT De la Hoya has just uploaded a video from his hospital bed. ODLH wrote … “Would like you to hear directly from me that despite being fully vaccinated, I have received Covid and cannot fight next weekend.”
“The preparation for this comeback has been all for me in recent months and I would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support. I am currently in the hospital for treatment and am confident that I will be back in the ring before the year is over. God bless everyone and be sure. “
11:38 PT – Our Oscar sources tell us that the boxing legend – despite complete vaccination – has been hit hard by COVID … and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
58-year-old Evander Holyfieldhas agreed to step in and box Belfort on September 11 at Triller, our sources say.
One remaining hurdle is getting Holyfield-Belfort approved by the California State Athletic Commission.
If the commission does not sanction the fight, we’re told the whole event will still fall … but it’s moved to Florida.
The match should be ODLH’s return to the ring after more than a decade … after losing his last match to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
De La Hoya dedicated himself to getting back in top physical condition in preparation for the match over the last few months … and seemed to be in great shape and recently showed us his 6-pack as he left the dinner in LA
As for Holyfield, The Real Deal – one of the biggest fighters in boxing history – fought in late 2011 … but has recently talked about his want to return to the ring.
Belfort – an MMA legend – has been more active over the last few years … last fights in the UFC in 2018.
That Anderson Silva vs. Tito Ortiz battle is still once.
Bottom line … Oscar is out and Evander Holyfield and Vitor Belfort are fighting – either in Cali or Florida.
