OWATONNA, Minn. (WCCO) – A family in southern Minnesota embraces the cold in a creative, vibrant way.
Ashley and Ryan Thorson built a giant igloo in their front yard for their three sons.
“Keeping three boys busy and entertained requires some creative activity,” Ashley said.
For three nights, they froze colored water in aluminum trays to hundreds of ice blocks. Then it took more than 12 hours over four days to construct the igloo where the ice blocks were put together with snow.
“You’re about two-thirds of the way through and you do not want to do that anymore, but you’re too invested so you have to finish,” Ryan said.

He says the roof was the hardest part. He and his wife had to work as a team to make sure it held up.
“We only dropped one wall down when we were about five rows up, but since then, when it was nice and warm, it melted, and now it’s actually pretty solid,” Ashley said.
Thorsons estimates that more than 250 ice blocks keep the igloo upright. It is higher than six feet.
“Hopefully it brings as many smiles to other people as it does to our family,” Ashley said.
