Parents of Anthony Huber condemn ‘unacceptable’ Rittenhouse verdict

The parents of Anthony Huber, one of the men Rittenhouse killed, say the verdict made them “crushed and angry.”

“Today’s verdict means there is no responsibility for the person who murdered our son,” Huber’s parents said in a written statement. published after the decision. “It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any city, incite to violence and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street.”

Huber, 26, tried to disarm Rittenhouse as the 17-year-old fled the scene of his first fatal shooting after killing 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum.

Defense Attorney Mark Richards argued in the trial that Rittenhouse’s actions were justifiable because Huber had a skateboard in one hand while reaching for Rittenhouse’s AR-15 rifle with the other. The skateboard, he claimed, was used as a weapon, which justified Rittenhouse’s deadly response.

“No sensible person who sees all the evidence could conclude that Mr. Rittenhouse acted in self-defense,” Huber’s parents said. “In response to racist and violent calls for action by militia members, Mr. Rittenhouse traveled to Kenosha illegally armed with a combat rifle.”

Here is Hubers’ statement in its entirety:

We are devastated and angry that Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted in his criminal case for the murder of our son Anthony Huber. There was no justice today for Anthony or for Mr Rittenhouse’s other victims, Joseph Rosenbaum and Gaige Grosskreutz.

We did not attend the trial because we could not bear to sit in a courtroom and repeatedly watch videos of our son’s murder, and because we have been subjected to many hurtful and ugly comments over the past year. But we followed the trial closely, hoping it would bring us to an end.

It did not happen. Today’s verdict means there is no responsibility for the person who murdered our son. It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any city, incite violence and then use the danger they have created to justify shooting people in the street. We hope decent people will join us in vigorously rejecting that message and demanding more of our laws, our officials, and our justice system.

Make no mistake: Our fight to hold those responsible for Anthony’s death continues in full force. Neither Mr. Rittenhouse or the Kenosha police, who approved of his bloody vandalism, will escape justice. Anthony wants his day in court.

No sensible person who sees all the evidence could conclude that Mr. Rittenhouse acted in self-defense. In response to racist and violent calls for action from militia members, Mr. Rittenhouse to Kenosha illegally armed with a battle rifle. He threatened fellow citizens on the street. Although he openly violated a curfew, Kenosha police urged him to act violently. Kenosha police told militia members they would push peaceful protesters against the militia so the militia could “deal with them.” Shortly after, Mr. Rittenhouse Joseph Rosenbaum. The police did nothing. Worried citizens, confronted by someone who shot randomly on the street, stepped in to stop the violence. Anthony was shot in the chest as he tried to disarm Mr. Rittenhouse and stop his shooting. Still, the police did nothing. Mr. Rittenhouse continued to shoot and maimed Gaige Grosskreutz. Police allowed Mr Rittenhouse to leave the scene freely. Mr. Rittenhouse came to Kenosha armed to kill. Kenosha police urged him to act violently and our son has died as a result.

We are so proud of Anthony and we love him so much. He is a hero who sacrificed his own life to protect other innocent civilians. We ask you to remember Anthony and keep him in your prayers.
