Rajinikanth, Suriya, Thalapathy Vijay dominates the ten highest-earning Tamil films at US box office – see list of collections

Names like Rajinikanth, Suriya, Thalapathy Vijay, Chiyaan Vikram are synonymous with massive blockbusters in Tamil cinema, but did you know that their star power and box office pull is not limited to local territories alone? And no, we are not just referring to how much their film collects outside of Tamil Nadu, where borders are being erased quickly and Indian cinema is becoming more nationalized instead of the boundaries that previously existed between Bollywood and regional cinema. This time we are referring to overseas figures, or more specifically in this case, the US box office, which has been a growing market for Southern films since the new millennium. Although we are quite familiar with or at least can easily access (for those outside commercial circles) to domestic numbers of Indian films, even southern films today, which in the past were difficult to detect other than producer figures, it is quite different case for overseas figures. Now, we are not talking about the total overseas numbers for a particular movie, which is readily available in most cases, no, siree. We harp about the box office collection of specific territories abroad, just as the trade picks up collections from different territories at home to understand where a film has worked, where it has not, it has worked everywhere or nowhere. Today we are specifically at the US box office. So without further ado, here are the most lucrative Tamil films at the US box office:

Kabali: $ 4.72 million
Petta: $ 2.46 million
Enthiran: $ 1.48 million
Kaala: $ 1.89 million
Darbar: $ 1.76 million
Lingaa: – $ 1.55 million
24: $ 1.42 million
Mersal: $ 1.38 million
I: $ 1.34 million
Honorable Mention – Sivaji in 11th place with $ 1.32 million Read also – Laal Singh Chaddha: Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor in the lead role is exposed again; eyes THIS new festive weekend? [EXCLUSIVE]

As shown above, Rajinikanth is not only the undisputed doy through annals of Tamil cinema, but his star power and box office attraction resonate all the way to the US box office, where the first seven films on the list belong to him. Suriya, Thalapathy Vijay and Chiyaan Vikram round out the list in eighth, ninth and tenth places, while Thalaivar reappears in eleventh place, and would no doubt have more more records if we expanded the number of highest-earning Tamil films in America to twenty or even thirty, such is his superstar status.
